Anthony Meynell is probably one of the most underated British singer/songwriters there is. His songs sound as fresh today as they did when they were first released. "Big Smashes" is a collection of his finest work, backed by his band "Squire". The jangling Rickenbacker guitar, solid percussion and harmonious vocals combine to produce twenty-four three minute (or thereabouts) Mod Pop classics. The album takes you from a more hard edged, raw Mod sound to crafted ballards right out of the top draw. It may have been produced nearly twenty years ago, but it still stands head and shoulders above today's plastic Pop offerings. If you've heard Squire before you'll enjoy this collection of songs for what they are. If not take my word for it, you'll love it.
