This is a touching movie about an orphan boy who is hired by a heartless, wealthy sportsman to train his handsome Irish setter, Big Red.
Soon the boy and dog become inseparable, much to the owner's disapproval, and the boy is fired.
The bonds of loyalty are tested when Big Red runs away and all hope is lost of ever finding him again.
The strong bond that exists among man, boy and dog lead them all into a series of thrilling adventures, setting the course for a life-or-death battle with an unexpected adversary-a cougar!
This is a story brimming with friendship, courage and adventure that will forever touch the hearts of young and old alike.
Highly recommended!

I do hate reviews that tell us the storyline so just a few lines to say go buy this movie for a real family treat.
A big red dog, a soppy all American teenager of the 1960s and Walter Pidgeon (sadly without Greer Garson) all wrapped up in a touching story makes this a real nice movie. Of course disney studios involvement doesn't harm the package either.

at aged 78 watched this never seen it before had it as a gift made me want to rush out and buy a red setter dog but unfortunately not at my age
a gem of a film and the young lad what a wonderful actor looked him up on i.m.d.b. to see if he had made any more films but sadly only one french film what a shame I feel that he could have achieved great things why didn't Disney use him for other films sad to say the "young star" died in 2012 from emphysema aged 65 would have loved to have seen him in other films he could have become a great actor if you haven't seen this film I urge you to buy it as it is worth every penny
