Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Duelling TV celebrity chefs, competing to produce the most delicious dishes from five pound's worth of mystery ingredients? Sounds like your cup of tea? Then Ready Steady Cook, a collection of more than 100 recipes from the BBC show of the same name, is the book for you. As followers of the show will know, the mixture of chefs includes a number of names to conjure with, such as restaurateurs Alastair Little and Antony Worrall Thompson, and food writers Thane Prince and Valentina Harris. Crucial to the ratings are the antics of Ainsley Harriot and Richard Cawley, expert practitioners of that brand of high camp that has found a natural home on daytime television. The result, as reflected in the book, is a sort of free-for-all circus, with food being thrown cheerfully around (as it were). The recipe titles give something of the overall flavour: Squids In!, Dreamy Bream With Langoustines, Cause A Stir-Fry, Steak 'N Salsa Sarnie, Fancy Fruit Cobbler, Sexy Toffee Pudding. Behind the jaunty "Ooh-er Missus" names there are sound and imaginative recipes, clearly presented and illustrated. And if you need further persuasion, the pictures of Richard Cawley doing something flamboyant in a snakeskin print shirt are worth the price alone. --Robin Davidson

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for fast meals at little expense, 23 Jun 2001
I have been a fan of Ready Steady Cook for ages and cannot always get the recipies off of the teletext, they are easy to follow and can be cooked on a budget and are always kid friendly. For a single mum who is diabetic the fish and low fat meals are the best, tasty food that is quick and easy and does not cost the earth is a god send. The extra tips you get about cooking, ingredients and favourite items is an extra bonus. I hope there is more!!!

The "pork with rosemary and red wine sauce" from this book is just gorgeous and looks pretty impressive on the plate. I'm not sure why but all the best recipes in here seem to be Ainsley Harriot's - the man's amazing. My only criticism would be the number of pots and pans that often seem to be required, and just like the shows it's easier (and more fun) with another person helping to chop things or stir things. But by no means necessary. They do all seem to be do-able within 30 mins or not much more. I received this as a present and have since bought it for others - don't sneer just 'cos it's on daytime TV, this deserves a place on the kitchen shelf alongside your Nigel and Nigella and Jamie. Really good food.
