Review

'A brilliant analysis of a potent force'
-- David Hale, Global Economist

The Big Mo is a compelling book that journeys seamlessly from finances to the Iraq war, from oil prices and climate change to religion and pop culture in an effort to explain how we behave and why we are so easily led. From start to finish, it's an entertaining read.
--The Financial Times

Almost nobody understands (momentum). Mark Roeder does. He makes it starkly clear why it can never again be 'business as usual'. This book is a brilliant wake up call.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spin doctors beware, 25 Feb 2011

A warning for spin doctors. We may not know WHO you are but we are wakening to WHAT you are up to. All thanks to The Big MO. What an informative read. Mark Roeder's new book alerts us to the overwhelming forces working inside momentum (big mo). Putting the banking fiasco to one side, The Big Mo focuses on havoc created in human affairs as we follow-the-leader like a bunch of lemmings. Momentum being the leader. Boom/bust and random reporting spring from nowhere overnight to take hold as established fact. We comply with 'popular' thinking. The author asks why is it so difficult "to dissent from the crowd even when an individual knows it is the right thing to do." Don't ask me. Go read the book. Like I said, it is an easy read and a wakeup call for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT FOR CONSPIRACY THEORISTS, 22 Feb 2011
This review is from: The Big Mo (Paperback)
This book is not for conspiracy theorists. It strips away the mystique behind many recent world events,(eg Iraq war, global financial crisis) to reveal that they were caused by large scale momentum, or Big Mo as Roeder calls it. No-one is really in charge in this momentum-driven world, so bad stuff just happens. We are all swept along in the flow which is becoming faster thanks to the Twitter/Facebook revolution. I was reading this book during the uprising in Egypt and noticed how often the media talked about the "momentum" factor, so it's clearly a topical issue. I also found the chapter on technological momentum to be a particular concern, because I practically live on my mobile phone. The Author does draw on some tenuous links, and he overuses the Newtonian physics analogy, however there is no doubt that his underlying premise is real and quite terrifying. A compelling read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Big Mo" Opens Eyes, 22 Feb 2011
By
A. J. Cohen (Santa Monica, CA United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Big Mo (Paperback)
Author Mark Roeder has nailed it - the new decade's "elephant in the room" - the "Big Mo".

We all look in awe at social, technological and corporate events we see as bizarre and incomprehensible - just as pre-Newtonian society did before Sir Isaac showed them the "rules" governing movement, including momentum. Roeder does the same for us - stepping outside these drastic perturbations and analyzing this pervasive force which explains them.

It's a clever, insightful read and highly recommended. It should also be on school and college curricula.
