PRAISE FOR DEAN KOONTZ’S NOVELS:

'Dean Koontz is not just a master of our darkest dreams, but also a literary juggler' The Times

‘Dean Koontz straddles the genres, and pretty successfully, too … Odd Thomas is certainly a page-turner – this is a read-at-a-sitting novel – with a terrific final twist’ The Observer

‘Psychologically complex, masterly and satisfying’ The New York Times

'Near Dickensian powers of description.' Los Angeles Times

Product Description

Dean Koontz’s first ever nonfiction book, the deeply moving story of his life with his good dog Trixie

Dean Koontz is known for exploring the dark side of human nature in his fiction. But his softer, playful side comes out when he talks about his beloved dog, Trixie, a golden retriever.

Trixie had a special place in Dean's heart. And now, in this, his first non-fiction book, Dean opens his heart to his readers to give us memories of Trixie, of the glorious dog who changed him and changed his life.

There's everything in this memoir: adventure, mischief, emotion, and sadness too. Dean will talk with joy about the many gifts Trixie gave him – and the lessons she taught – and he'll talk with sadness at losing his beloved pet.

The loss of a dog is a heartbreak that's been experienced by a great many people, and Dean's delving into that loss is a powerful part of this book, and a cathartic experience for those of us who have loved and lost an animal companion.

Trixie had a big little life and lives for ever in Dean’s heart … and in these pages.

I knew before I even started reading this that this book would have me in tears by the end of it. Dean Koontz writes with such passion, humour and emotion, especially when writing about his late dog, Trixie, that I knew it would be a heartbreaking read. And I wasn't wrong. Starting with a brief biography of Dean, his wife and their living arrangements, and then in to the time when they adopted Trixie and how their lives changed for the better afterwards, this is as funny, enchanting and tear-jerking as anything you could read. Not only was I in tears at the point where I KNEW I would be in tears, there were at least 3 other places as well. But it's not soppy, sentimental hogwash; it's wonderfully written, so full of life and joy, that by the end of it you just want to go out and get yourself a dog so you can experience even half of what the Koontz's experienced through Trixie.

I received this book as a gift and although I had read and enjoyed other books by this author, I thought to myself, "what would he know about dogs anyway". I'm a dog lover of course and have read many books on the subject but this one is special, I couldn't put it down and read it in less than 24 hours.
The beauty of this book is that yes, he does talk about things Trixie used to do, but he mostly concentrates on the relationship between dog and human and his use of English is amazing. This is the book that every owner would love to write in tribute to their dogs. You will love it.

Heartwarming 26 Dec 2009
By Alison TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
A touching book about the life of Trixie the dog and how she enhanced the lives of people around her. Koontz writes about the relationship he and his wife had with their first dog, Trixie.

Trixie was the opposite of the many dogs in dog memoirs; she was a well-behaved and well-trained dog that didn't chew the sofa! Even with such a well behaved dog, there is still much to say about her life. However, the book is more than just a memoir, Koontz covers much about the human-dog relationship. He also talks about the profound effect Trixie had on their lives and how they have been changed as a result of sharing their home with a dog.

I loved the paragraph in the last chapter which Dean quotes from his book "The Darkest Evening of the Year", it pretty much summed up what I feel about the dogs I've had in my family.

It's a 4/5 for me because although it was lovely, touching and interesting for the most part, Koontz does ramble on at times, making reading a little arduous. Nevertheless, if you love dogs you will find this book heart-warming even if the ending has you in tears as it did me.
