Biography

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Ticking Over! 11 Aug 2007
By Stotty
Format:Audio CD
After the success of 90125 (their biggest selling album ever), Yes decided to stay with pretty much the same formula.
'Rhythm Of Love' is a good, radio friendly, pop rocky start with the usual distinctive vocal harmonies and some good guitar pyrotchnics from Trevor Rabin.
The title track is a powerhouse of a track with even more guitar fireworks, a thunderous CD shattering rhythm section, and some nice vocal passages from Jon Anderson.
'Shoot High, Aim Low' is my favourite song on the album. It's a fairly dark track with underlying brooding menace and good vocal interplay between Rabin and Anderson. A real slow burner.
'Almost Like Love' is not my cup of tea I'm afraid. Jon Anderson comes close to rapping in the verses and I don't like trumpets in Yes songs. Having said that, Trevor Rabin's guitar and Tony Kaye's Hammond organ playing is reminiscent of very early Yes.
'Love Will Find A Way' is another chart friendly effort with a good folky feel to it and some more good vocal harmonies. Apparently, this song was originally written for Stevie Nicks and you can tell. It is very much in the Fleetwood Mac style.
Next track 'Final Eyes' is very much in the traditional Yes mould with lots of acoustic guitar, dreamy instrumental passages and an angelic vocal display from Jon Anderson.
'I'm Running' is something of an epic, and again has an early Yes flavour with lots of guitar and organ. A real show stopper.
Album closer 'Holy Lamb' is something of an antithesis to the bigger, harder edged tracks in that like, 'Final Eyes', it's a delicate, wistful piece with lots of acoustic guitar. The only bad point is that it's a song that seems to end, just when it gets going, which is a shame.
Again, Trevor Horn is involved in the production, and like it's predecessor, 90125, Big Generator has a classy sound to it. It's a shame that this record took so long to make, and an even bigger shame that Jon Anderson left after the subsequent tour, as you can tell that some of Trevor Rabin's songwriting was heading into the kind of ambitious areas that he would probably like to be part of. Instead, Anderson decided to bring former Yes members from the seventies together to actually rival the existing Yes band.
Going back to Big Generator, it doesn't quite reach the level of 90125 for energy and production, but it does come pretty close. It's a good snapshot of the band's eighties sound, and some of Trevor Rabin's guitar playing is quite brilliant. It's something of a forgotten Yes album that needs to be rediscovered.

Following 90125 was never going to be easy , but this album proved that Yes were back with a bang . From the riff of 'Love Will Find A Way' , to the anthemic qualities of 'Shoot High Aim Low' to the Carribbean tinged 'Almost Like Love' , production was impeccable . Trevor Rabins guitar work gets to shine as well , and the last song on the album ( 'Holy Lamb' ) takes me back to Wonderous Stories .
Well worth a listen .

90125 #2 10 Feb 2003
Format:Audio CD
If you're not a die hard Yes fan, but you liked 90125 then this is the album for you. Superb, and I mean superb, production with great songs make this album an absolute pleasure to listen to.

For some unaccountable reason (well shamely accountable really) Yes only really did 2 albums of this calibre, 90125 and Big Generator. The album 'Union' fails and the 'Talk' LP never really got it back (although its worth checking out).

From the pop styles of 'Rhythm of Love' and 'Love will find a way' to the brilliance of 'Final Eyes' ('Like a river without a stream, Nightime without dreaming' - how good is that!) this album has it all. But beware, it's not standard Yes in the vein of earlier albums. If you know 'Genesis' then this is Yes' 'Invisible Touch'.

There are no Rick Wakeman solo's, indeed there is alot of Trevor Rabin. But that is a good thing as long as Trevor Horn (He of Frankie godness) is producing. Jon Anderson's voice is as good as ever and there is no faltering in the song writing.

I have read some poor reviews of this album and I suspect they come from 1970's beardies. This is an album which really stands the test of time and ranks up there with 'Going for the One' and '90125' as the greatest Yes have ever 'Generated' (get it?)
