Format: Blu-ray
Jason Shepherd is a teenage boy with a hyper-active imagination and a weakness for telling tales. To avoid detention at his school over the Summer holidays, he has to write a 1000 word essay. He does the task and calls the story Big Fat Liar.
A limousine knocks Jason off his bicycle. The limo passenger is Marty Wolf, a big-shot Hollywood movie producer (played by Paul Giamatti), who reluctantly gives Jason a lift to school. Marty has the bedside manner of a snake, he has no people skills and tramples over others to get what he wants.
Jason departs the limo in a hurry and leaves his essay inside the car. The unscrupulous Marty steals the story, and uses it as a film script that becomes a smash hit Hollywood blockbuster. He basks in the glory of his latest movie hit.
Jason and his best friend, Kayleigh, take a trip to Los Angeles, to gain revenge on Marty. Jason needs to do this to persuade his disbelieving father that his school essay really was stolen, and that he's not lying to cover up that he didn't do his school work.
When they confront the odious film-maker, he refuses to concede his duplicity to the kids. Jason determines that he is going to get even and starts plotting the downfall of Marty. They then go about this is an exceedingly funny fashion, it had me laughing out loud several times.
This is a pleasing and fun family film, with likeable child actors, and Paul Giamatti acting his socks off as an obnoxious slimeball. The film has a nod to great movies like Home Alone, Matthew Broderick's Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Jim Carrey's Liar Liar, though it's not as good as those flicks - Home Alone [Blu-ray] [1990], Ferris Bueller's Day Off [Blu-ray] [1986], Liar Liar [Blu-ray] [1997]. A very silly but happy way to spend 90 minutes, my 12 year old daughter loved this pic.
