Big Country Live at their very best,
By Ian S (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Country - Live: Without the Aid of a Safety Net [DVD] [Region 1] [NTSC] (DVD)
One of the things I'm so glad I did was to see Big Country live on the Buffalo Skinners tour. In my opinion they were at the peak of their considerable live powers at this point. After freeing themselves from the turmoil of the previous record company and regaining Mark Brzezicki on drums, they cut loose in glorious style for this tour and this DVD finally does some justice to this concert recorded at their spirtual home, the Barrowlands, Glasgow.
The previously available VHS version of this concert and a DVD release on Disky both had terribly muffled sound, definitely not a limitation of the concert as the accompanying CD released at the time sounded superb. EMI have finally seen fit to do a proper job on the sound and the DTS 5.1 track here is excellent. If like me you've been disappointed with LWTAOASN before then this is the release you've been waiting for. The only criticisms are the video quality which must be down to the original quality and is quite poor on the distance shots, (however it's not worse than previous releases) and the fact that the centre channel isn't used, a minor niggle given how good it is. The concert kicks off with some acoustic stuff before getting the loud guitars out and rocking in true Big Country style. You won't see many crowds like a BC one pogo-ing themselves crazy and singing their hearts out. The new excellent sound on this release make this the must have it should always have been, and captures one of the best live bands ever and their loyal fans. Buy it, and then buy the newly released double CD of the whole gig which contains much more than the original. The best Big Country live release by far. The Final Fling is very good, but for very different reasons.

Big Country will never lose its appeal. It is bold, and one of those timeless bands that make you feel uplifted and in the mood to let your hair down. Whatever type of music you are into (and i like many genre's of music) it feels like you are letting go of everyday stresses when you belt it out and sing along to it (or gurgle along to it out of tune like I do - but who cares) Brilliant.
