Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Big Brother was the TV event of 2000. The set-up--put 10 members of the public in a specially constructed house, keep them under 24-hour surveillance and watch them sweat out the weekly evictions of one of their number, voted by us, the public--was derived from a hugely successful Dutch programme, and gripping, unmissable stuff it proved to be over here, too. Because you already know the outcome--and if you don't, where were you last summer--the game-show aspect of the programme doesn't really work on DVD or video. But that was never really the point. It was the personalities involved that made the show such compulsive viewing, and they remain as lively as ever.

On Big Brother--Uncut and the DVD To add some spice, Channel 4 have included scenes that were "too hot" for television: when Nicola decides to do some nude body painting, we see a bit more flesh now; some of the conversations between the contestants are a bit saucier than the original broadcast versions; and there are some hilarious close-ups of a few of the housemates picking their nose. But the best thing about Big Brother: Uncut is what made the whole show such big news in the first place: Nasty Nick's downfall, here played out in all its excruciating detail.

Given what we know about him, it's fun to see Nick try his hand at some team-building exercises the producers designed to select the 10 contestants before the programme aired. This scene is also included on "Inside Big Brother", a making-of documentary accompanying "Big Brother: Uncut". Made while the Big Brother show was still being broadcast, there's an agreeable urgency to this programme. The Channel 4 producers interviewed here seem a little bewildered by the show's success. John Del Mol, the co-creator of the Dutch show, hazards a guess that the British show was such a hit because it was so well cast, and there's a fascinating look into the design of the house--"penal chic" was the effect they were after. Also included in this package are profiles of the various contestants, but these feel a little redundant, if only because, over the course of the show, we learn a lot more about the housemates than what's on these skimpy resumes. The profiles do, however, tell us that most of the contestants harbour show-biz ambitions. Now, why is that not a surprise? --Edward Lawrenson

This is a highly enjoyable video, make no mistake. It covers a wide selection of the highs and lows from the unique series, and throws them together in a non-stop montage. By nature of the title 'Big Brother Uncut', there is a concentration on nudity and swearing, which are interesting in order to judge just how much Channel 4 trimmed out for initial transmission. The video covers a wide variety of themes, and jumps across the series with a great selection of highlights. It hits its peak (unsurprisingly) with the rumbling and eviction of Nick. (Am I alone in feeling sorry for the guy?) There are only two disappointments with the tape: 1. It's not on DVD. Come on, this was a series which saw the internet reborn in this country - Why not produce a recording of a higher technological quality. 2. It's not at least twice the length. The final section (Eviction) is far too quick, and leaves you highly frustrated at the wasted potential of the exercise. There is so much more which could be done to record the success of such a brilliant TV phenomenon. Let's hope there is a follow-up of much greater depth (and on DVD). On the bright side, however, it is hugely entertaining, and that alone warrants the star rating, but the series needs (and deserves) more.

Gripped as I was watching each episode, the video came as a bit of a disappointment - few noteworthy additions and rushed in places to allow Nick's downfall to eat into one-third of the playing time. Whilst this was undoubtedly the moment when the viewing figures took off, more emphasis on lighter moments and "gaffs" might have proved fruitful. Interviews with the housemates after the event to gain insight into their individual experiences might also have been interesting. The list could go on!

On a positive note, it was pleasing to see that the producers resisted any urges they might have had to degrade the housemates too much - living in such an environment takes some bottle. A slightly extended look at Darren's verbal onslaught was also interesting.

Worth the money? Just.

I'm a MASSIVE fan of Big Brother and I looked forward to the video. When I got it, it was, how can I put this, all right. There isn't a section on the tasks which I was surpised by and the evictions and contenstants sections were very rushed and I would have liked more on those and less of Nicks downfall, which we've all seen a million times and could probably recite by heart. Also there wasn't enough Anna. Apart from the bit in the diary room where she and Mel are flirting with BB...No bomb incident...Basically, if you're looking for a Nick highlights tape with more dangly bits, this is the video for you. But I'm not sorry I bought it. It's a lasting memory of last summer.
