First things first! Resigned to life isn't for everyone. However, if you like your music tuneful, moving and long then this is a must!
It was perhaps a mistake on minutemans part putting the singles as the first 4 songs, but this doesnt take away from their quality. 'Gave you all the blame', '5000 minutes of pain' and 'words fail me now' manage to combine moving and heartfelt lyrics with good tunes which can stick in your head for days. The other single taken from the album - 'bigboy' lacks the downbeat feel of many of the other songs, and along with 'quality time' it offers a witty and extremely catchy look at fairly normal situations, such as sitting down with a beer and watching neighbours!! The final standout song on the album is 'rid of you' which is heartbreaking, and has a meloncholic melody to match!
The other 4 songs arent bad, in fact all the way through matt jones writes beautiful lyrics, they just don't have quite such memorable tunes, but are still well worth a listen or 2!
My one criticism is of the track length! No track on the album is under 5 minutes long, and they don't always use this time well, in fact most of the songs could easily be whittled down to 4 minutes without losing any real content!
So although this album is in my opinion a great piece of art that can be enjoyed by many, i wouldnt advise those of you looking for the 3 minute pop songs of the strokes or king adora to pick up a copy! To the rest of you - run out and get it now!
