This book is absolutely amazing and one of the best I have ever bought! It really does what it promises in the title: gives even a beginner useful instructions on how to create realistic drawings with graphite pencil. It doesn`t deal with colours but there are lots of other books for that. This one is unique in its very easily understandable, step-by-step explanations and all the little tricks of the trade are presented generously. I have been drawing since childhood, advancing from doodles to Japanese manga characters but stopped at that point, never being able to advance to truly realistic drawings. This was quite frustrating until I restarted again 6 months ago, but I am still a very beginner artist when it comes to realistic drawings. This book helped me immensely to see what I was doing wrong and how I could correct it. I must say, with all the wonderful drawing examples, this book is a pleasure to look at and read even for someone who is not an aspiring artist, so you can imagine what a joy it is for those, who are! The book discusses several subjects in detail (inanimate objects, animals and people)and if you ever had that frustrating problem of not being able to draw just the right noses, eyes, teeth, and the curve of the face was just a little lopsided and the hair kept looking unnatural, this books shows you the right way to do it. It contains several excercises that you can do on your own, first having read the explanations. The text is professional but very easy to follow, loaded with good advice. A definite must for those, who are bent on drawing photo-like pictures and getting the pleasure from it, not to mention the oohs and aaaahs from friends and relatives when they see what you have managed to achieve. Buy now and have fun!:-)

- This book primarily covers drawing portraits.
- Realistic portraits; not artistic/expressive portraits.
- Covers drawing portraits based on a photograph.
It doesn't cover life model drawing.
- This book covers only pencil drawings.
(Not charcoal, soft pastel, ink, pen, sanguine, etc.).
- It only covers black and white drawings;
no colour (coloured pencil, oil pastel, paint, etc.).

This book is fine if you want to make portraits that look like the photo you have, or if you want to make a realistic portrait of a "most wanted" criminal, as the authors do as part of their job.
In the area of expressive/artistic drawing this book offers nothing, in my view. It's only realistic rendering. All portraits are similar in style; look alike; boring in less then a fraction of a second.
The portraits at best draw some interest because of who is portraid, not based on the artistic way the portrait is drawn.
So pick up the practical tips offered and move beyond this beginner stage as soon as possible.

The key reason that I give it a four star rating is that it offers a lot of pratical, useful tips on realistic portrait pencil drawing for a favourable price; good value for money.

I ordered this book for a friend who is just starting out with tattoo's. The level of detail and explanations they give throughout this book is excellent. I would recommend this book to people who are just starting out drawing or have been drawing for years but would like to take on something new. Excellent book indeed.
