Genuinely useful with lovely recipes, 11 Mar 2010
This review is from: The Big Book of Quick and Healthy Recipes: 365 Delicious and Nutritious Meals in Less Than 30 Minutes (Paperback)
I have found this book genuinely useful, mainly because all the recipes really are quick to do, and I find most of the one's I've tried very tasty. Looking at the other reviews, it's true that a few ingredients for a few recipes are not so easy to find, but I don't get the comment about portion sizes since it says all the meals are for two which suits me fine. The other thing I like is that the recipes make sense even if you're not a very experienced cook, so it is one of the cookbooks that I keep in the kitchen instead of on the bookshelf. So for me the book has been good value, and a good introduction to eating more healthily.

It's easy to recommend this book. In fact, I've done more than that and bought it several times to give as presents. One thing that sets it apart from other books which offer recipes where the nutritional and calorific value is assessed is it's diversity and unusual choice of dishes. OK on occasion there might be an ingredient or two that is not languishing in my food stores. But hey, that's an exception, and one that I have never found to have lessened the usefulness of this book. The emphasis is on good, seasonal food- look for the best veg you can find and the recipes will repay your pains!!
I bought this book for my friend's mother. She is both French and an exceptionally good cook. She raved about the book, bought several copies for friends and for her daughter too! Why? What makes this title stand out from the crowd includes the emphasis on OPTIONS. Recipes are presented with a dairy-free/animal-product free option, but, and this is REALLY unusual, alongside dishes achieved using meat, fish or dairy. Catering for a family where some members eat meat and others do not, or where cooking using unfamiliar dairy-free ingredients, can suddenly seem like a nightmare. This book offers a way through the confusion of how to multi-cater whilst providing food that is nutritious, attractive and very tasty.

High hopes - BIG Disappointment, 2 Jan 2009
This review is from: The Big Book of Quick and Healthy Recipes: 365 Delicious and Nutritious Meals in Less Than 30 Minutes (Paperback)
I bought this book recently because I had got myself into a rut of cutting out so much from my diet that I was hardly eating anything at all. I choose this book because it has seasonal recipes, and tells what goodness is in each meal (vitamins, good for cholesterol etc). It also tells you how many calories are in it. The problem is it doesn't tell you a) how many servings the meal makes and b) whether it is total calories or calories per serving. I also found a lot of the meals to be unappealing using quite a lot of specialised and expensive ingredients which really put me off. When I did attempt to make a mushroom soup it was awful!
This book might be ok for some, but for most people, if you want to be inspired with quick, simple, delicious recipes I'd recommend Jamie's Ministry of Food: Anyone Can Learn to Cook in 24 Hours anyday. I got this for Christmas and have used it everyday since!
