This is fantastic stuff. Fourty minutes of slow-paced, stripped down folksongs sung in a slightly drawling, seemingly apathetic manner sounds like a drag, but it really -really- isn't. Really.
I'm undecided still to figure out what exactly makes this such a magical record in my book. I like his nasal, lonely voice which comes across sturdy and fragile at the same time. I like the way he doesn't use too many words or too many instruments and gives a meaning to the spaces in between. I thoroughly enjoy his slightly naive-sounding laments, the occasional oddities in his storytelling and the compelling nature of his (sometimes completely undecodable) metaphors. One of the very few records I immediately put on repeat after it's finished. Really.
