Break out your pinstrip suit, winkle pickers and open the cocktail cabinet cos the boys are in town and they really know how to swing!! This is jive hall jazz at its uptempo, upbeat, swingin' best. A definte worthy collection of some of the all time greats including Minnie The Moocher and Go Daddy O - music really doesnt get any better than this. This is compulsive stuff, the kinda beat that gets under your skin and you cant help but toe tap to.
The boys pay homeage to an era in jazz that could easily be described as its finest hour and I would have no hesitation in recommending this recording to any music lover. Check out Mr Pinstripe Suit on track two (my personal favourite), the vocals really do justice to such a golden age in jazz.
SUPERB !!!

I too heard of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy through some other media form - you can see them in action on "Swingers" video/DVD. This CD is just incredible, the perfect accompaniement to a G and T on a balmy evening. Every track is perfection in itself, but together they make one of the most original CDs I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Have also just seen them live for the first time at the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom - they had the joint jumpin' and no mistake!! Their sound is as good live as it is on disk. Highly, highly recommended - can't sing their praises enough, and if I could, I'd want to sound like the sexy, smooth, velvety tones of Scotty Morris (even though I'm a gal!!).

I first came across Big Bad Voodoo Daddy via the film Swingers [DVD] [1997]. The songs You & Me & The Bottle Makes 3 Tonight (Baby)" & "Go Daddy O " were used in that film and I thought at the time well I wouldn't mind going to a club that played that kind of music as it would seem a jolly good time would be had by all. This coming from a hard boiled white indie boy ...well at the time I was.
Released in 1996 this eponymous album was the debut of the contemporary swing band from southern California. And I think I would be hard pressed to have a more enjoyable time unless the twin ministrations of Halle Berry and Scarlett Johansson came round wearing not much and clutching the strongest Viagra known to mankind. Ladies feel free to substitute those two with hunks of your choice ...the Viagra is still optional. People of other sexual orientations....well just go with it. Have I covered all the bases there?
Putting aside my lavicous fantasies the music is led by horns that swing like a Waqar Younis toe crusher , percussion that pops along the rhythms and piano arrangements that are spritzy and so full of zest they could wake up a member of Parliament and make them forget about that expenses claim for a while.
The ultra smooth vocals of Scotty Morris often glide effortlessly over the top and even if the lyrics are ridiculous and trite this music is not meant to be a vehicle for Radiohead style introspection. The aforementioned tracks from Swingers prove this emphatically as do other tremendous numbers like "Mr Pinstripe Suit" , "Minnie The Moocher"( a cover of a Cab Calloway classic) "Mambo Swing" ,"Jump With My Baby " and well just about any track you care to mention.

When i first listened to this i was slightly confused. Was i in my own home, or had i suddenly been taken to a speakeasy in 1920's USA? I certainly would have been convinced if i was wearing a suit and had a G&T in my hand! This album has to be one of the most original albums i have ever heard. We live in a pop culture of the likes of the terrible busted, and these guys have really managed to pull out all the stops, and produce a pure, swinging, jazz age anthem of a CD. This is not at all a style of music i would even have thought of listening to, but thank god my friend lent me it! If you make even just 1 purchase this year, then let it be this album.

I heard about this band from the novelisation of 'Never Been Kissed' (of all things) and decided to give them a go. What I heard blew me away. Finally, I have found an album that is absolutely perfect! It's a complete throwback to the classic era of swing and jazz that existed in the fifties - so much better than most of the music around today (I am seventeen, so I'm not being an old fuddy duddy when I say that) - and it's unbelievably fun! My favourite tracks on here have to be Mr Pinstripe Suit, King of Swing and Minnie the Moocher - complete and utter classics. (Anyone else who's reminded of the beginning part of Some Like it Hot?) Sooo... to sum up.... it's amazing. Didn't think it was possible to have this much fun listening to music anymore!

I have been looking for that big band sound for ages and when browsing saw this and thought it was worth a go. I was so right, this has the heart of the swing era with a modern feel, every instument has its moment and each note fills my car - some even escape out when my fav tracks are turned up - the voice suits so well it almost becomes another instrument to add to the pleasurable transport back in time. Not easy in a Golf!
