Top of the world 16 Sept. 2004
By Jazzcat - Published on
Format: Audio CD
How would you feel if you were sitting on the top of the world? It would be great if we could ask this to Pass, Jackson or Brown who were for their entire lifetime seated up there! But unfortunatly they are all gone. So try to hear for yourself how big they are buying this record. This cd proves why they were so big. The interplay between these guys was spectacular. Their chops unequalled in Jazz. And with their instruments they created a perfect Jazz unit, a small orchestra with soft sounds that did swing like Buddy Rich big band !! They recorded a lot of records togehter in various situations but this album is particularly satisfying from the very start. "Pink Panther" is NOT the Mancini's theme for the Panther's cartoons. It's not. It's a Milt Jackson's blues. Then among the best tunes contained here we have "Nuages" a Django Reinhardt original, "Blue Bossa" from Kenny Dorham, Jobim's "Wave", "Moonglow" (a standard tune) and another blues in the ending place. What to add more? It's a Pablo record (OJC today): Pablo was the record company founded in the seventies by Verve's Norman Granz. I don't find the period particularly interesting for Jazz (the seventies) and the company did at the time some questionable recordings. But you surely can find in the Pablo catalog some very good sessions. This is one of them. For example all the Sarah Vaughan's Pablo records are absolutly stellar. It depends. This Pablo record is very very good and this is all you have to know.

As Big As It Gets 26 April 2012

The previous reviewer hasn't left me much, except to say that although these great jazz musicians are gone, their music will live on forever. I had a chance to meet Joe Pass when I was studying under Herb Ellis at the U. of North Texas; a finer, most humble gentlemen you will ever meet.
I've had this album on LP for many years, but now on CD. I still enjoy it as much now as when I first acquired it.
As for the tunes, they managed to play bebop, while still being understandable, even to the novice jazz affictionado. There's a ""softness" about all the tunes with excellent harmonic structure & point-counterpoint (interplay).
My favorites are "Wave" & their rendition of "Moonglow" that grabs me every time.
"The Big 3" is a good title for the album; they don't get much bigger than these three guys. But listening is believing, so get it for yourself. .

A few words about Joe Pass:"The flowing lines and harmonic complexities of bebop are daunting on any instrument, but they particularly challenge guitar players. Not so Joe Pass, who went the beboppers one better; by finger picking where he figured out how to fill and add bass notes as well as solo."

Get this album. If you're into jazz, I know you'll love it.

If you are a Milt Jackson fan, or a jazz vibraphone fan, or even a jazz fan who wants to hear three great musicians flow thru some great tunes, this is a must. Milt Jackson in a drummer-less trio with Ray Brown and Joe Pass....nothing else needs to be said:) It swings, and its great to hear Bags without drums...the other one is "Two of the Few" a duo with Oscar Peterson.

This is truly the big 3, because they put it together so well. Ray Brown knows it all and has played it all along with Joe
An excellent recording 24 Jan. 2014

One of those very accessible yet complex recording that one goes back to year after year. These were all superb musicians needless to say and the decade this was recorded in allowed for excellent fidelity.
