4.0 out of 5 stars Small and concise, just what the doctor ordered 15 Mar 2004
By Jennifers Daddy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The book is aimed at people who are probably starting out in cycling. It has sections on how to set up the bike, nutrition, basic weight training and ailments. If you've been cycling for a while then this book is not for you, but for the beginner it is excellent. I would also highly recommend "Training techniques for cyclists" from the same publisher. It is slightly more advanced and just as cheap.

2.0 out of 5 stars Who is this book for? 28 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Other reviewers have said this book is aimed at beginners and with basic advice on purchasing a bike I think this is probably the case. However, the book is aimed at club riders who are serious about cycling and getting fit using cycling as the main activity rather than casual cyclists or people who use their bikes to commute.

Although the book contains plenty of useful information some of it simply wasn't relevant for me (working out how many calories you have consumed on a ride based on a number of factors including drafting), some of it was far too basic and as the book is only just over 100 pages topics that are important and relevant aren't covered in enough detail.

I don't recommend this book - you can all of the information you need from other sources in a more accessible writing style with better pictures and graphics.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly thin for the money 3 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book that is. Agree with the other reviewers that it is aimed at beginners, so intermediate and above look elsewhere. There really isn't that much information, and its not especially detailed, but then it doesn't contain that many pages. For example, there is only 1 page summarising a training plan, and its all a bit vague: ideal perhaps for beginners, but if you're serious about getting into racing then it won't suffice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get more from your excercise. 27 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great book which goes through all the basics including positioning, frame size, fitness and weight control using Cycling as well as more advanced topics such as tips on pedalling and hillclimbing.

I've read it a couple of times now and always pick up on something new.

Worthwhile to give you a bit of a boost from Cycling during cold winter days and something to energize you!

2.0 out of 5 stars You've got to be keen! 18 May 2009
By Gwilym
Format:Paperback
Having read other reviews saying this was a book for beginners, I thought I'd give it a go. But this is definitely not a book for casual bike-riders who just want a bit of information to do it a bit better, it's for keen cyclists who have somehow missed this information elsewhere. The bits about setting up you bike start with putting it on a trainer, and then you're rapidly into "beginners" mistakes to try to avoid, which focusses on riding in a paceline. The bit that really told me this wasn't the book for me was the anecdote less than a quarter of the way though the book about a guy who quit his job because he noticed his cycling performance had dropped off. I certainly need a different book and suggest that you might too - the experienced cyclists seem to think it's for beginners and as a beginner, I certainly don't think it's for me.
