Not bad, but...,

I bought this book and did a tour of Holland with it, but gave up using it pretty quickly. I found the route directions to be confusing and got lost fairly quickly, which is frustrating! I think that some of the cycle networks may have changed since this book was written, and I am not convinced it is up-to-date - this is very important, as sometimes you are directed to make a turning ever 10 metres or so. I think it would be pretty good if you want to find the best peaceful and picturesque cycle routes between the towns/cities, or, for example, around the Kinderdijk, but I would spend your money on a good map and a compass instead and perhaps source routes online (which presumambly are updated). Also, whilst lost, it was pretty easy to figure out the routes the author was taking you, as they follow many of the clearly marked, mapped and signposted signs anyway, so would rather rely on the maps/wayfinders than any book. Finally the book is quite American and a little patronising. She suggests taping spare spokes to your bike - who an earth would ever do this and fix a spoke on a cycle track in a Country where there are cycle repair shops in every village?

You need to follow the instructions very carefully,

We bought this book and found it very inspiring. We had 2 fantastic cycling holidays in Holland. At first we kept getting lost, but then realised you have to learn what all the abbreviations mean in the instructions and follow the book very very carefully. Since the book was written, the Dutch have introduced a new direction/signage system, called Knooppuncts, which is fantastic. Knooppuncts are green numbers, and it's a very simple system to use. You can buy cycling maps with the knooppuncts on for every area, at tourist information. What we did was use the book in conjunction with these maps ie we drew the route from the book onto the cycling map with a highlighter pen - this worked really well.
Jane PS Please ignore the author's advice to wear a helmet in Holland. No-one else does. Leave the lycra at home too.
