Product Description

This is a magnetic (rather than air resistance) Turbo Trainer, which means the resistance can be adjusted by using the gears on your bike, giving fantastic variability in work rate. In comparison to the air fan trainers, these are wonderfully quiet in operation, although the tyre and tread pattern you are using makes a big difference to the noisiness of any trainer. It comes fully pre-assembled and all you need to do is fit the supplied quick release skewer to the rear wheel. Please note that this trainer doesn't work with bolt through axles as quick release skewers don't work with bolt-through Hubs. The skewers are very presentable Campagnolo look-alike and can be left happily on a bike without disgrace! It folds down to 900 x 250 x 600 in one movement for very easy storage and re-deployment in seconds. The trainer has an adjustment facility to allow use of either 24" - 26" or 700mm wheels. It weighs 7.1 kg, is robust and sets up on non-slip feet. CONVERSION CUPS ARE AVAILABLE IF YOUR BIKE DOES **NOT** HAVE A QUICK RELEASE REAR WHEEL. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great Turbo Trainer 4 Oct 2011
Verified Purchase
I bought this turbo trainer because I can't get out on my bike and I need exercise badly. I was going to get a new quick release wheel but I've got it to fit on the bolts on my mountain bike so haven't had to shell out any more money. It does exactly what I need it to do for a first trainer and I use the gears on my bike for the resistance. The only drawback is that it is noisy, so watching the tv whilst on the bike is out, but with the zen playing my music through earphones it's great, I can't hear it! Cheap enough too!

3.0 out of 5 stars single speed turbo trainer 28 Sep 2011
it's ok but is very loud in operation and being single speed there's no way of gearing up to reduce the noise. well built and easy to set up. if i had my time again i would have splashed a little more cash and purchased the variable one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cycle turbo trainer 10 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase
Not feeling safe on the road and requiring to exercise without walking, I found this adaptation for my roadster bike exactly what I wanted. It is easily assembled, strong (I'm 17 stone) and converts my bike into an exercise machine at moderate cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Noisy? Not with slicks. 31 Oct 2013
By bmabbs
A number of reviewers complain about the noise of the trainer, but as it's a magnetic resistance it shouldn't be markedly louder than any other mag trainer. I suspect some people are using off-road MTB tyres, which would probably be very loud. I have an mountain bike with semi-slicks fitted, and with the roller pressed lightly on the tyre you could hold a conversation next to it with lowered voices, or hear a TV over it. With the roller screwed harder onto the tyre and contacting the side tread pattern it did produce a louder buzz, but not excessive. Fit a slick and you'll be fine.

Otherwise, the build quality is substantial, and while it's not as pretty as a 200 Minoura it's stable and solid, with cast metal wing screws. For 40.50 inc 24h Interlink delivery from Black Dog Bikes (they have a website) it's the cheapest turbo trainer I've seen, and well up to the job. Another reviewer mentioned that it's coped with 27 stone, plus bike. I'm 15.5st and it's fine. It comes with a cradle to raise the front wheel too, which many trainers don't.

The resistance is altered by changing gear on the bike, and you'll probably want to stay on the largest chainring and top half of the cassette. My only criticism is that I'd prefer a higher resistance and drop it down with the gears, as with 11x44 tooth top gearing and 26" wheels it felt like it was on the verge of spinning out, but on a road bike with higher gearing I'm sure it would be fine. As an ex rower I also tend to prefer lower cadences and higher torque, but most cyclists who prefer to spin up a bit more should be happy. Black Dog sell another version with variable resistance at around 60 with a beefier looking mag unit, but I don't know how the resistance range compares. I'm sure they'd be helpful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not brilliant 11 Jan 2012
By Shaun
Item as described. Decent build quality. Not "whisper-quiet", but certainly not loud with the slick tyres on my bike. Overall good value for very little money.
Two gripes:
1)The hub clamps had been fitted on the wrong sides - which took all of five minutes with an Allen-key to fix, but still.
2)Resistance is low. Even using my highest gear, pedalling isn't much effort - in the bottom half of the range it's hard to pedal fast enough to keep up with the wheel.

By gary
I read the reviews before I bought this. And a lot of them said it was noisy!!!!! I live in a block of flats and I warned all my neighbours. But they've all told me they cant hear a thing. Also it is made of a very high standard. Smooth running. And robust. Good buy me think.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Content 8 Feb 2012
By Marco
inexpensive tool to turn your mountain bike into an exercise bike, which is what I was after. Hence I am happy with my purchase, I recommend it if you are not looking for something too fancy. As other reviewers commented, it can be a bit noise if you are not using road tyres.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite sturdy and does the job 18 Nov 2011

This is a good piece of kit, it does the job. I had to buy some slick tyres because my chunky mountain bike tyres made too much of a noise, but that is not the fault of the product. It would still be too loud to use indoors but I guess this would be the same however much you paid for a turbo trainer.

You can actually vary the resistance by tightening or loosening the screw, and also you can use higher gears on your bike for extra resistance. I find you get a smoother ride if the gear is higher and the back wheel is turning faster.

Would recommend for the price.
