This slow paced but visually stunning film has at it's heart a tragic love story of Sullie, daughter of a General and his concubine, and Jinha, an orphan of seemingly low birth. These two meet as children when Jinha saves Sullie from a vicious dog. It is practically love at first sight and they become sweethearts until years later things happen to cause the proverbial spanner being thrown into the works. From here the story takes a darker and more violent spin.
The violence is very short and snappy, the fight scenes never taking up more than 2 to 3 minutes at a time, allowing the relationships to form the main part of this film rather than the fighting. The fight scenes are well choreographed though not always well filmed as some are edited in far too messy a fashion. The acting is superb, especially from the two leads, who never leave you in any doubt as to the intensity of their love. Visually the film just looks wonderful, some truly amazing looking scenes. There are a few narrative holes here and there, some things do not always make sense. Overall though this is a wonderful film that deserves a very wide audience.

A great piece of art 26 Oct 2004
Format:DVD
Bichunmoo is a phenomenal film that is a wonderful example of what happens when you combine that classic style of eastern storytelling with the special effects and filming techniques available today.

The story focuses on Jinha and his battle to regain his true love, Sullie, who is stolen from him at the beginning of the film and to guard the Bi Chun Shin Gi - the sword art that he practices. One of the wonderful tricks of this film is its ability to combine the wonderful action and sword fighting with the romantic storyline and undertones that seem to somehow run together throughout the film.

The use of SFX in this film is one of the things that attracted me to it. One of the principle effects, that of the energy wave Jinha drives out of his sword, seems like it should only be possible in anime, but it works beautifully on screen.

Fans of Crouching Tiger would do well to look at this movie. I think it is difficult to compare the two since, although there are similar elements, the methods used to tell the story have many differences, both blatant and subtle. Those who like either a good dose of brilliantly executed swordplay or korean stories would also be well served by this film.

Bichunmoo is truely the best example of a historic epic which can be found outside of china or the far east. This film is visually beautiful which allowed for critics to compare it to CTHD, however I don't think that this justified, as CTHD is just TOO polished during the choreography of the fight scenes, though it worked for CTHD it would not have worked here. Here the scenes are more earthy and therefore more realitic ( though the film is originally based on a manga ). Don't get me wrong, there isn't the usual manga styled gore fest you get in many adaptations.
The leads are beutiful together and some of the set pieces are truely magnificent, especially when centred round the lead characters, though sometimes the filming of the fights scenes are a little bit messy at times, hence the 4 stars. This edition is apparently cut and therefore would explain why sometimes you have new characters entering and disappearing, but this doesn't distract too much from the main focus, that of the love between Jinha and Sullie. In truth, this is a love story with alot of fighting in it rather than the other way round, but is a refreshing take from the Asia direction. Another really good film would be 'Moon Warriors', which is quite similiar visually, the story has nothing to do with the odd title.
The last scene of Bichunmoo is probably the most hauntingly beautiful ever set to film, in my opinion and would surpass any one scene from CTHD.
All in all I think you get the picture that I like this film alot, though it has been cut from the original by about an hour this film is still very enjoyable. The backdrop is amazing, the costumes lushis, the acting is very typical of historic epics and even the music is refreshingly modern at times. Hope that this helps.
