5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - really useful 20 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I recently went to Turkey to visit the 7 churches found in the Book of Revelation and this book was brilliantly helpful. But it wasn't just in those churches alone - reading round the areas I went to and being able to understand more of the area that I was in was really useful. A really good book for those interested in the early church and its place in Turkey

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource 12 Mar 2011

A must-have for Preachers and Bible Study leaders.

Mark Wilson is the perfect person to write this guide to important Biblical sites. As a scholar and tour guide who's lived in Turkey since 2004, he offers not only historic information but other helpful resources:

- Side trip ideas offering off-the-beaten path sites
- "In site" sections which speak to the daily life of ancient Jews and Christians from the use of parchment to water systems to slavery. There is an enormous amount of helpful reference material in these sections.
- Lots of helpful site maps and photographs
- "Ancient Voices" in which actual references from stele inscriptions to Apollonius of Tyana (1st C AD) and Pliny the Younger (2nd C. AD)
- A chart of the 7 Ecumenical Councils with dates, locations, and basic purpose of the assemblies
- A timeline charting Biblical references to Asia Minor

This is a book for Bible geeks and history lovers. What I especially appreciate about Mark's work is that he is unafraid to clarify/correct church tradition with solid historical references.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wish there were maps 24 Aug 2013

The descriptions were good but I was really hoping to have maps. I wanted to go to some of these places while I lived in Turkey. I would have liked a frame of reference to know where the places were and how far they are from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent background reading 18 Oct 2013

I recently returned from a three week study tour in Turkey and wished I had read this book beforehand. I learned of it from others on the tour who carried it (despite its weight) with them.. It has both the history of the site plus (for most of the larger sites) maps and tips for visitors on how to best approach the visit. It gives both excellent background material on all sites (including some relatively minor ones) plus lots of sidebars with the curious and unusual information about people, places, ancient engineering, water systems, roads etc as well as religious customs and Biblical connections.. I think I would recommend buying it as an ebook if it is available to take with you since is is heavy.(385 pages) I bought it on my return to help me remember what I had learned about each site as a resource for classes on Biblical topics. It has a glossary and index to all the places plus good suggestions for further research and reading and some great pictures. Loved it!.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! 29 Aug 2013
By Mark Haswell - Published on Amazon.com
I had the privilege of being with Mark Wilson on a tour this summer. His scholarly wisdom and understanding are evident throughout "Biblical Turkey". The application of scripture to the artifacts, ruins, and historical records is very insightful. In reading the book, I came away with a much more complete understanding, not only of the major sites and events that took place there, but also of what everyday life was like in these ancient communities.

Absolutely gorgeous! Well put together and the definitive source. I believe Dr. Wilson also took most of the photos, which are stunning! Great book. I can't wait to go!
