Product Description

Product Description

The Complete Parallel Bible includes the complete texts of the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha from four of the most popular contemporary versions of the Bible: The New Revised Standard Version, The Revised English Bible, The New American Bible, and The New Jerusalem Bible. The texts are arranged in direct parallel format allowing for some variation where the texts do not immediately coincide. The footnoting from the four versions is retained at the bottom of the relevant column. This volume has several uses: It is a valuable tool in suggesting the possible range of meanings in a given text, especially when the nuances of the original language are not easily conveyed. It allows the reader to select the most accessible translation of any one passage which is invaluable for liturgical and classroom use. The use of parallel texts indicates where a consensus on translation has been reached, and also highlights areas where further research continues, and where reference to commentaries may be appropriate. It allows the reader access to translations other than that which they might normally use. It allows comparison between the literal approach to translation (NRSV and NAB), and the literary style (REB and NJB). The four versions also allow comparison of the most significant ecumenical versions, and those which come initially from a Roman Catholic background.

Not a bad parallel edition - the typeface is easy to read and footnotes are included. These four Bible translations (NRSV, NJB, NAB, REB) are all high-quality scholarly editions and very useful to have under one cover. My one complaint is that the page thickness prohibits the use of ballpoint pen in writing personal commentary.

I searched a long time to find a parallel bible containing the NAB and NJB. The others NSRV and REB were an added plus. The parallel design is to make a comparison of the more literal translation to the one that best follows the meaning. This is almost necessary as even the literal and meaning comparisons are still interpretations. Look at how they handle Psalms 88:19. For variations in verse numbering.
In the front, there is a real nice description of how the different versions came about.
The introduction has:
· The Translations and their Background · The Arraignment of the Translations
· The Order of the Biblical Material · Variations in the Text of the Different Translations
· Explanations of the Translators' Footnotes
· Variations in Verse Numbering
· Use of the Parallel Text

Excellent comparison of the widely used english translations in catholic and protestant circles. Contains two translations that follow a close word for word interpretation and two translations that follow a more meaning for meaning interpretation. Includes scripture considered canonical by Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox communions.
