I have read the NIV Bible for nearly 20 years since becoming a Christain, so to change would be a BIG change. Although a lay person, it's important for me to have an accurate translation of the Bible. The ESV is that and in modern English. The reading flows a lot better than the NKJV.

The only down side is that the version produced by Harper/Collins. The US publisher version has an introductory page for each book of the Bible and maps at the end. Also a free CD ROM is included with the text of the ESV and KJV as well as other books. Not essential, but very useful.

I'll continue to use the NIV for our children's work, but for personal study I'll be using the ESV!

I chose to receive this Bible on becoming a Methodist Local Preacher because I'd heard how accurate the translation from original Hebrew/Greek is. In places it seems to be quite a raw translation - word for word but where word for word translation is not possible, it seems to rely too heavily on sticking to traditional interpretation i.e. King James' translation. I have found the concordance to be one of the best features of this Bible: It's very in-depth compared to other ones I've used. Despite not being quite what I'd hoped for, this is still about the best Bible for those wanting to get near to the original text - though it doesn't dispose of the need for other resources (Greek/Hebrew word studies, commentaries, other Bible translations etc)

This is a cracking translation for those unable to get their heads round the Authorised Version/ King James. No Thee Thou or Thine to contend with, and written in a dignified yet flowing style.
Why not buy this and a cheap paperback of the KJV/AV : the only failing of this translation is that there are a few passages which never sound the same as the wonderful King James!
