More About the Author

I am a cognitive scientist writing about mind, body, creativity and learning. Much of my work has been in education, trying to persuade schools to weave the building of positive learning habits and attitudes ('Building Learning Power') into everyday lessons and school activities. The latest book, Educating Ruby, written with my long-standing collaborator Bill Lucas, is a call to arms for parents, families and teachers to push for the kinds of educational changes that are so urgently needed. As a cognitive science writer, my books concern the importance of unconscious and bodily underpinnings of human intelligence. The latest book in this field is Intelligence in the Flesh: Why Your Mind Needs Your Body Much More Than It Thinks. I have also written about Buddhism and the relationship between easter religious traditions and contemporary psychology. I am retired from full-time university life, being now a Visiting Professor of Education at King's College London and Emeritus Professor of the Learning Sciences at the Centre for Real-World Learning, University of Winchester.
