Book Description

31 Mar 2010
Street art has established itself as an integral part of the art world in the last few years. The crossover from subculture to high culture is illustrated by the recent attention that this work has been given by renowned institutions such as the Tate Modern and Fondation Cartier as well as by auction houses like Sotheby s. The topic is discussed in art magazines and the cultural pages of leading newspapers and is featured in the syllabuses of art and design schools. As interest soared, the need for information about street art grew. But, until now, there was no insightful view into the thought and work processes of a reticent, heterogeneous scene whose would-be members often don t even identify with the label. Comprised of interviews with 100 key players from around the world, Beyond the Street offers a comprehensive examination of street and urban art. Insiders Patrick Nguyen and Stuart Mackenzie question each of their subjects on every conceivable aspect of the genre from the past to the future, from the artists ideals to their daily lives, from working in complete freedom to working in the art and commercial worlds. The thought-provoking range of answers make the 400-page book an incomparably extensive source of direct, unfiltered information. Beyond the Street features interviews with leading artists such as Shepard Fairey, Swoon, and Os Gemeos. The book also offers the views of representatives of the most important sales outlets for street art including Jeffrey Deitch and Jonathan LeVine Gallery. In addition, curators from auction houses such as Christie s and Phillips de Pury comment on the development of street art in a classical art context. Interviews with key commentators, collectors, and enthusiasts such as Martha Cooper, Wooster Collective, and Agnes B. provide further insight. Brought together, these separate and distinct perspectives create a uniquely authentic collective portrait of street and urban art that is captivating, informative, and entertaining. Each interview in Beyond the Street is richly illustrated with photographs of an inspiring collection of work. In addition to presenting outdoor work, the book also features the pieces that the artists have created for exhibitions and other indoor spaces. The commercial aspect of the street art movement is rigorously documented for the first time. Among the photographs featured are a number of images of the artists studios or the artists themselves at work, providing a rare glimpse into their methods and environments. Features: 12ozProphet. Beyond the Street: With the 100 Most Important Players in Urban Art: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art

Comprehensive street art book, featuring, as the title suggests, a lot of the main players, not just artists but galleries, auction houses, collectives and festivals. While it couldn't possibly include every single one of the ever expanding roster of artists and events etc it's just as well, because this is going to take some time to read. Not just a book full of pretty pictures but rather an insightful and interesting series of interviews peppered with more than enough photographs. I've been following street art myself for the past 4 years, attending shows and participating in online forums, yet this book has even managed to open my eyes to a few artists that have escaped my attention. The authors have spent 2 years putting this book together and the effort shows. This certainly wasn't written behind a computer using only the internet for research but has involved lots of festival, show and studio visits, phone calls, plane trips, emails and face to face interviews, the hard work and passion of the authors is clear and has paid off big time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read and a must have! 26 May 2010
By J. Kerr
This is a comprehensive and insightful view into the world of contemporary street art, however this summation does not do it's justice - the book offers so much more. Providing commentary on, and interviews with, some of the leading players in the world of street art from artists to print houses, from auction houses to festivals and back again. Whether you're a complete novice to the scene, or you have a healthy interest in street art... in fact even if you're an art magnate this book has something for everyone & provides unrivalled exposure to the scene. Compelling, addictive, a major coup and a triumph - this book has been compiled out of a love of street art by both Stuart Mackenzie and Patrick Nguyen, furnishing insight across several facets and what a good job it's done. Buy two and cancel your gym membership as it's huge!

5.0 out of 5 stars Street Art 7 Aug 2011
By Mr Leon
Great book. Only downside is a couple of prominent Street Artists are missing. Most notably Banksy.
But overall an excellent book. Well worth the money and time reading it.
A definitive guide to the Street Art genre

4.0 out of 5 stars A superb collection of artists. 30 Sep 2010
If you ever needed a collection of the greatest examples of Street and Urban art, well, you have found it here.

This book has a super nice quality to it, the pages are packed full of full color photographs, interesting and insightful interviews with each artist. It is larger and heavier than i had anticipated but this just make it an even better product to hold it your hands and spend several hours with.

The artists chosen offer a good variety of styles and techniques and the book is diverse enough to keep you entertained each time you pick it up.

This is a must buy for anyone with a intreat in Urban Art and a first buy for someone who doesn't know where to start !

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book 15 May 2010
By Paula
Beyond The Street is an amazing book and a must for anyone interested in street art. The book is huge (and heavy!) and beautifully produced. Stuart Mackenzie and Patrick Nguyen have produced what really amounts to an encyclopaedia with 100 profiles of artists and galleries from around the world. I have other books on street art but what sets this one apart is the size and scope - and also the fact the authors have personally interviewed all of the artists. With almost 400 pages of interviews and fantastic pictures this really is the definitive work on street art. I would say for anyone interested in graffiti, buy it, you won't be disappointed,

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Representation! 15 May 2010
Fantastic book that covers the majority of the influential players of our street art generation.
Very well put together with great photos & interviews which provoke great memories of this scene from the past few years.
In comparison to other books from recent times it is slightly more expensive but this can be justified as rather than a book its more like an encyclopedia of street art and will cover pretty much everything you wanted to know.
Its also very well produced and will take a bloody good while to work your way through and even then you will probably go back to it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book 14 April 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This amazing, very heavy, very thick art book covers the whole gamut of street art. Not only the artists but the photographers who document it, the writers who record it and the galleries that support it. Beautiful, inspiring, coffee tabler stuff.
