Book Description

31 May 2003 0285636731 978-0285636736
Thousands of people suffer from stammering. It can lead to bullying in childhood, underperformance at school and in adulthood it can hinder a career, impede social relationships and cause a lack of confidence. At last, there is a book that can bring real help to those who are affected by a problem that can destroy careers and relationships. The McGuire Programme started in 1994 and is now a world-wide organisation run by people who stammer to help other people who stammer. Dave McGuire founded the programme after feeling that his own life had been ruined by his severe stammering. It is a combination of physical techniques and mental strategies that deal with the fear of stamering as well as how to develop an assertive attitiue towards the problem. The approach provides a massive improvement for thousands of people who stammer, including Gareth Gates who joined the programme after his first 'Pop Idol' appearance. The McGuire Programme method is the first step for sufferers to gain control of their life and to start enjoying, rather than dreading, speaking. It can help you to reclaim your life and be the person that you want to be.

I have just got this book and read it after hearing about the Macguire programme.

Just reading the book and digesting some of Dave's insights has been extremely helpful in improving my speech and my attitudes towards it. I will go on the course soon, when I feel ready and have saved up the cash.

Also, you might find reading this along with "Feel the fear, and do it anyway" is useful. It will be scary, but it will be worth it I'm sure...

It's a great book for a stammerer. You will only get so much out of it though, and highly recommend going on a McGuire course too, it will change your life, as it did mine. Brilliant!

Reading the book first though, gives you an insight in to what the McGuire Programme does to help with your stammer.
If you think it's your thing, then the course is the next crucial step. Lifetime membership too, so they're always there for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars overcoming a stammer or stutter 6 July 2004
Format:Paperback
This is a great holistic approach to overcoming one's stammer. It is unique in that it is a program involving people that stammer helping other stammerers to recover. It uses a more objective approach by developing the sports analogy to improving your skills with practice. It details a specific plan of action, and provides many inspiring stories from fellow recovering stutterers. It aims not just to improve one's fluency, but reaches for the lofty goal of eloquency in speaking. I highly reccomend it!
