Book Description

31 May 2003
Thousands of people suffer from stammering. It can lead to bullying in childhood, underperformance at school and in adulthood it can hinder a career, impede social relationships and cause a lack of confidence. At last, there is a book that can bring real help to those who are affected by a problem that can destroy careers and relationships. The McGuire Programme started in 1994 and is now a world-wide organisation run by people who stammer to help other people who stammer. Dave McGuire founded the programme after feeling that his own life had been ruined by his severe stammering. It is a combination of physical techniques and mental strategies that deal with the fear of stamering as well as how to develop an assertive attitiue towards the problem. The approach provides a massive improvement for thousands of people who stammer, including Gareth Gates who joined the programme after his first 'Pop Idol' appearance. The McGuire Programme method is the first step for sufferers to gain control of their life and to start enjoying, rather than dreading, speaking. It can help you to reclaim your life and be the person that you want to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helped a non stammerer to understand! 15 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this to help me understand and help my partner with his stammer. He has been on the McGuire course but lack of practice has meant he has lapsed in his technique. The writer is an recovered stammerer so he knows what he is taking about. Am sure we will find this helpful.

This is a totally inspirational, totally practical book, for starting to deal in a serious, committed way, with your stammer, perhaps for the first time. It is easy and clear to read, but applying it requires commitment, resolve and a certain ruthlessness of purpose to get through the many layers of fear, anxiety, humiliation and distress that will emerge as you stop avoiding feared words and situations and start facing what your stammer is all about. It is the "set text" of the McGuire Programme, put together by Dave McGuire, and representing his answer to his own speaking difficulties. Reading the book and putting it into practice without going on one of their supportive courses as well is extra hard work, and ideally needs super-supportive and understanding home back-up in order to cope with the inevitable, frustrating (a polite word) set-backs. (Which back-up support I have had.) The actual techniques/approaches used are a combination of physical breathing exercises (learning to do it differently) and psychological attacks on the myriad rubbish ways that people with a stammer adopt to try and cope, and the development of positive alternatives. All of this spins-off into other areas of life and has nothing but beneficial consequences. There is definitely a time when it is right to try this (I avoided it for years) and it is not for the faint-hearted. However, it has one over-riding feature : IT WORKS if you put in the time and effort, and keep at it. I am still a work in progress (as is Dave). If you have a stammer and want to do something about it, buy this book. Now might not be the right moment for you - but very probably its day will come.

4.0 out of 5 stars overcoming a stammer or stutter 6 July 2004
This is a great holistic approach to overcoming one's stammer. It is unique in that it is a program involving people that stammer helping other stammerers to recover. It uses a more objective approach by developing the sports analogy to improving your skills with practice. It details a specific plan of action, and provides many inspiring stories from fellow recovering stutterers. It aims not just to improve one's fluency, but reaches for the lofty goal of eloquency in speaking. I highly reccomend it!

Make sure you get the newest revised edition 2008. The new one has A5 dimensions, whereas the one in the picture is the old one - slightly wider binding format.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource 9 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although I haven't attended the McGuire Programme course (I have however attended a similar course), I have found this book to be incredibly useful as a reference text. While I believe that attending a course and having the breathing technique explained and demonstrated to you is the best way to pick it up, there is a lot of useful information in this book which should be helpful to anyone. As I understand this book, the McGuire Programme is based around two main strands - the breathing technique and non-avoidance.

The breathing technique helps to counteract the physical blocks which afflict people who stammer while the non-avoidance advice helps you to reduce the fear of people and to counteract the negative associations which have built up in the past.

This book, along with Self-Therapy for the Stutterer, Stuttering: Inspiring Stories and Professional Wisdom: 1, Stammering: Advice for All Ages and Coping with Stammering (Overcoming Common Problems) should, in my view, form the core of everyone's stammering/stuttering library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book worth reading over and over again.. 10 April 2011
I read the paperback version of this book regularly over many years and have been waiting for the Kindle version for years. I am really happy I bought it immediately.

It is a great book for reading periodically as you progress in your personal journey to Eloquence and Freedom from stammering. The McGuire Programme uses this book and has helped me put into practice the techniques explained in the book.

As I develop and understand myself better I find more insight and help from Beyond Stammering. It provides techniques for the physical, mental and emotional aspects to recover from stammering.

I believe this book and the McGuire Programme has changed my life for the better - beyond my dreams.
