Review Darin was above all a protean singer, moving through genres and styles throughout his 17-year career. He began as an exuberant young pup setting teen hearts aflutter with his homely good looks. "Splish Splash," his first hit, features gurgling plugholes, rock 'n' roll yelps and plenty of Miss Molly. "Dream Lover", his other early success, was a yearning standard for bedroom-bound adolescents 30 years before Morrissey.
Darin moved on to lounge and swing standards, sharing a repertoire with the Rat Pack. He even expanded it. Darin was the first to take Kurt Weill's thug satire "Mack the Knife" and make him sound like the kind of guy youd want to knock back cocktails with. From Sinatra to Robbie Williams, the song hasn't been out of service since.
Sassy and stylish, Darin moved like a showman through the Great American Songbook: "It Had To Be You", "Irresistible You", "Clementine". He even manages to make "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" sound half-way decent, whooping it up with a gravelly voice and twisting sax.
Darin's handling of narrative was superb. It would take a heart of stone not to laugh at "Artificial Flowers", the tale of an orphan child scraping a living selling paper blooms. In Darin's hands, though, it becomes a jaunty social satire on the ladies of society who wear the flowers while little Annie waters them with her tears. It's a glimpse into Darin's politics. An idealist who worshipped Robert Kennedy, Darin adopted yet another genre in the early 1970s. He was covering Dylan songs ("I'll Be Your Baby Tonight") and writing his own folksy ballads, such as "If I Were A Carpenter" before dying aged 37 from a weak heart.
Politics and an unpredictable style are perhaps the reasons Darin's star does not burn brighter today. As this selection confirms, Bobby Darin was definitely Premiership material. --Jack Smith

During his all too brief career, Darin had rock & roll hits, including "Splish Splash" and "Dream Lover" (number 1 and number 18 in the UK charts respectively) and classic versions of "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea" (charting at 1 and 8 respectively). He also touched on country, folk and show tunes on the way. His version of "Guys and Dolls" gives Frank a serious run for his money, and "Don't Rain on My Parade" swings as well as anything from Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr or any of the 50s legends that were Darin's contemporaries. All these and more are contained on this classic retrospective.

Brilliant compilation includes all the classics,
By Peter Durward Harris "Pete the music fan" (Leicester England) - See all my reviews (No. 1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Beyond The Sea: The Very Best of Bobby Darin (Audio CD)
This collection contains forty of Bobby Darin's finest songs from his peak years, ranging from his rock'n'roll music to his Sinatra-styled ballads. Dream lover, You must have been a beautiful baby, Things, If I were a carpenter, Mack the knife and Beyond the sea were top ten hits in Britain and America. This set also includes the British top ten hits Lazy river, Clementine and Multiplication and the American top ten hits, Splish splash and Queen of the hop. Bobby's singles were sometimes covers of older songs. Here you can find his versions of Nature boy (Nat King Cole), What'd I say (Ray Charles), Lovin' you (Lovin' spoonful) and several other great songs. If you want a comprehensive collection of Bobby's hits, this serves your needs brilliantly.

Don't see Kevin Spacey to hear Bobby Darin,
By
This review is from: Beyond The Sea: The Very Best of Bobby Darin (Audio CD)
I have seen the film Beyond the Sea, and while Kevin Spacey does a stunning job singing Bobby Darin's songs, the film is slightly spoilt by the total lack of Babby Darin's voice! This was particularly frustrating in plkaces, such as a sequence where Bobby Darin is falling in love with Sandra Dee while Dream Lover is playing. Spacey's arrangement of that song is nowhere near the same as Darin's original. When I was was very young, Bobby Darin was a regular in the UK singles chart. I grew up being familiar with Splish Splash, Dream Lover and Things. I became familiar with other songs later, like Mack The Knife and Multiplication. This CD set is almost as complete a collection as there is of Darin's hits. The range of material shows his brilliance as an interpreter (listen to the chatty, cheery style of depressing songs like Mack The Knife and Clementine) and writer (Splish Splash and Dream Lover were lyrically very simple, while Multiplication and Things had very clever lyrics). Darin's most successful period was only around 5-6 years, but this set also contains later material, such as a thoughtful reading of Tim Hardin's If I Were A Carpenter. If you want to hear what Bobby Darin really sounded like, listen to this fine collection, as you you won't hear himn at all in the film.

This review is from: Beyond The Sea: The Very Best of Bobby Darin (Audio CD)
Such a pity so many tracks are mono and dull when perfectly good stereo tracks are available if you search enough, why settle for cotton when you can have silk.I do not know a single equivalent CD to suggest, you will have to choose 2 more to get all these tracks, but atleast they will sound much better. If you look at my other reviews,I have suggested several excellent Darin CD's,in stereo(where they actually do exist,as very early stuff is only mono),I cannot recommend this CD.
