Points out Schneker's limitations & flaws constructively 16 Nov 2004
By Christopher Schlegel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
A well-reasoned book. Points out the serious flaws that do in fact exist in parts of Schenker's theory. And even better, offers some places to look for solutions; as opposed to other works I have read that unconstructively complain that Schenker was "old-fashioned" (using a great deal of ink & paper to do so!). Narmour's concept of heirarchies & networks is interesting; his knowledge of musical theory & history is impressive.

Although I find Schenker's theory very useful & powerful (especially when dealing with Beethoven, my favorite anyway!) I had issues with some very specific parts of the theory & this book breaks some of them down in a very specific & constructive manner. It is well thought out carefully & although I disagree with some of his conclusions & ideas it was helpful to read. On some issues he even convinced me of shortcomings that I had not thought of myself in Schenkerian theory.
