Product Description

From the author of "Innumeracy", this book explores the beauty and fascination of mathematics. It can be seen as a dictionary (ranging from algebra to zeno), as a collection of brief mathematical essays, or simply as the ruminations of a numbers man on and around his subject. It includes a broad range of mathematical concepts, from the basic to the advanced, from the traditional to such new areas as chaos and fractals, covered in an accessible way.

Beyond Numeracy is a well written book which brings mathematics to life. There are no math prerequisites--just an open mind and curiousity about the subject. Beyond Numeracy along with Paulos other title, Innumeracy, bring some sophisticated concepts that apply to all our lives into easy reach. Not to mention that it makes for some great cocktail conversation as well.

This book isn't a sequel to Innumeracy and certainly is not 'more of the same'. It is instead essentially a succession of short essays on different mathematical topics such as probability, calculus, algebra and so forth. Yet because of the authors very accessible writing style it is by no means a textbook but instead a thoroughly enjoyable journey through important mathematical ideas.

It's strength is that each topic is covered quickly with enough depth to be spark interest and enough brevity so that the reader can use each topic as a launchpad for further research if interested. The author includes his own thoughts frequently and this is welcome, making the book feel like a stimulating personal meeting with the author.

Wow! 12 Mar 2004

Format:Hardcover
For someone who always sruggled with maths in school and who, frankly, could never see the point, this book is a real eye-opener.

Informative, engaging and not in any way daunting. Highly recommended.
