I read Nancy Friday's earlier books when they were originally published in the 1980s. When I saw this new one I was interested to see how it would compare. The original books were busting out with original erotic fantasies - interspersed by some academic analysis - so I was expecting more of the same here... but sadly the book is far more erudite academic insight and far less erotic after-dark prose. Shame.

Unlike her early books, this Nancy Friday book is terrible. She's discovered Craigslist, but unfortunately hasn't discovered that most of the dating ads there are come-ons for porno sites. She repeatedly quotes Craigslist ads as if they were real.
The sexual fantasies here are rather boring, too.
If you want something like this, buy one of her early books, or an older Black Lace novel from Virgin.

Far inferior to her early works

Quite simply, a disappointment. Nancy's earlier anthologies of letters and feedback delved far more into the hearts and minds of the writers. Many were erotic and inspirational. Those in this book are sterile - she's lost her touch.

A Fascinating Probe into Our New Sexuality

As a psychiatrist, I found Nancy Friday's latest book, BEYOND MY CONTROL, to be an eye opening study of how advancements of women's equality, gay rights, and the sexual revolution from the 1960's has affected our sexual fantasies. The fantasies, though often erotic, are an inside look into the mind of the individual, their motivations, and a new attitude of openness in a quickly changing time. Particularly interesting to me were the internet entries showing the ease in which our once forbidden desire are now readily shared and acted out. Nancy Friday's thoughtful take on the affect of ease in which we can navigate a new sexual world is intelligent, insightful, thought provoking and filled with humor. It is a great entry to a life of study on the subject.
