Product Description

Set against the history of the gay pride movement in America, this book charts the discovery of AIDS by a Los Angeles doctor and its growth from a localized "weird gay disease" into an international epidemic. The race to isolate the virus causing AIDS and to find a cure is mainly carried out by two opposing medical research teams in Paris and the U.S., both of whom race to claim the discovery as theirs. Woven into this is the story of Ananda, a young Indian girl, an untouchable and a leper from Benares, who is rescured from prostitution by Mother Teresa's sisters. She is helped to overcome feelings of being a pariah to be accepted as a sister herself. Mother Teresa sends her to New York to work in the first mission for AIDS sufferers in the city. The story closes with the experience of Sugar, an illiterate transvestite drug addict, who is the first at the mission to benefit from a new drug.

I read this book a long time ago, but even though I have since read hundreds of other books I feel it is one of my most favourite books. I feel that reading this book has enriched by life... it taught me so much!
If like me, you are a person who likes to learn more about life through other peoples' experiences, than this book is a must read. In it you get to know scientists who are trying hard to win the coveted Nobel Prize for their research re AIDS virus; you get an insight to the gay community and the difficulties in dealing with the then unknown deadly virus of AIDS; you get to appreciate the good work done by Mother Teresa and her nuns.
This book made an impact on my life because it taught me the importance of prayer.
The only thing that I found a bit difficult was the medical terms found in mostly in the begining of the book, but do not let that put you off. This book is well worth reading - it is about real people, real life, love and beyond!

Breathtaking...even after all these years. 14 July 2000
By Karen Pok - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I must have read this book 4-5 years ago. And it left such an impression that after all these years...I realise that I have to reread the book and write this review. For everyone who have read ths review, my advice is to read the book, I will not give away the suspense. But the interactions of the characters, the emotions protrayed and the reality of it all will definitely strike a chord in everybody's hearts. For once, I am so disappointed that the book is out of print, because, it should be shared by all readers young and old. It not only opens your mind, it makes you see things in a perspective you never knew existed.

More relevant than ever 13 Oct 2008
By Emilio GT - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book relates the story of how the life and work of two Nobel Prize winners in different fields (the 2008 Nobel Prize winner in Medicine Luc Montagnier, who first identified the AIDS virus, and 1979 Noble Price in Peace winner, Mother Teresa who established the first hospice for AIDS patients in the U.S. in South Bronx, NY.) and many other smart and kind people, work together to address the suffering that AIDS brings, and the work of the scientific community to stop the spread of AIDS and try to find a cure.

This books reflects many of the best and worst attributes of Mankind, and is an incredibly interesting read.

This is one of the best books you will ever read

A global look at how individuals impact each other. 31 Dec 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My father gave me a copy oth this book about six year ago. I was captivated by the way individuals around the world had a positive impact on each other. i am thinking of the young priest who was gravely injured, but found that he could connect to others through praying for them. The work of Mother Theresas sisters, the scientists studying AIDS, it was truly a human mosaic. The intertwining of people who may never have met! Truly, "No man is an island."
