1.0 out of 5 stars Overall a poor book, 10 Feb 2002
This review is from: Beyond Kicking: A Complete Guide to Stretching and Kicking (Paperback)
"Beyond kicking, A complete guide to stretching and kicking", I don't think so. It would be unfair to say that this book is useless, some of what it has is relatively good, but it does however have several basic problems that reduce it to a poor 'read'.
Is this book for the beginner, the intermediate or the advanced martial artist? The authors have tried to cater for all of them and have ended up catering for none of them properly. While the "Superstretching excercises" (chapter 3) are indeed incredible, they only cater for the advanced student.
The warm up routine shown in this book (chapter 2) seems to be catering for an uneducated beginner. There is an excess of pictures in this section where a description and perhaps a few pictures (not 100) would have sufficed.
Chapter 4 on "Super kicking and Jump kicking drills" is useful as it displays, by means of pictures, how to correctly execute various kicks and jumping kicks (in case you were in any doubt). Again however there are too many pictures with many of them being repeated in the "kick drills" section of this chapter. There should be a good balance between pictures and writing, and in my opinion this book goes well over that balance in favour of pictures. Pictures by far dominate the book. Sections on weight training, cardiovascular workouts and diet are glossed over as being important without being adequately elaborataed on. Indeed the authors show pictures and instructions of how to run on a treadmill!! Ultimately the authors seem to be trying to take up space with vast amouts of pictures instead of real information. If you want a book on the science of stretching and how to get flexible then Thomas Kurtz' 'Stretching scientifically' is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars a challenging approach to developing flexibility, 12 May 2000
By Ruth Henriquez Lyon - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Beyond Kicking: A Complete Guide to Stretching and Kicking (Paperback)
This book is thorough, well organized and well layed out. The verbal descriptions of the moves are clear. (Some of the photographs are a little fuzzy, however.) Besides the chapters on stretching there are chapters on kicking drills, weight training, concentration and visualization, and diet (although his recommendations to eat horse meat and avoid ice cream didn't grab me). He also provides sample weekly training schedules for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. But beginners beware: this book is not for beginners. It assumes you can do the splits, and was designed to follow Frenette's first book, entitled Jean Frenette's Complete Guide to Stretching. If you're starting out, start there.
