Product Description

Product Description

The Second War is over, and Alliance forces have won. They have destroyed the mystic gate that linked Azeroth to the orcs' homeworld of Draenor. Many of the orcs trapped on Azeroth have been rounded up and placed in internment camps. But Small bands of orcs are spotted in the Eastern Kingdoms, intent on claiming certain artefacts for some unknown purpose. Worse, some of the orcs belong to clans never before seen on Azeroth. Somehow the Horde has managed to re-establish the Dark Portal on Azeroth. King Terenas orders the Alliance general Turalyon and the archmage Khadgar to end the orcish threat once and for all. Yet in order to do so, the pair must lead an expedition to Draenor itself. They and their allies must go beyond the Dark Portal before all of Azeroth falls beneath a new and more powerful Horde.

A Great Conclusion 20 Sep 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Part 3 or 3 (Part 1 Rise of The Horde - By Christie Golden) (Part 2 Tides of Darkness - By Aaron Rosenberg)

I read these book in completely the wrong order because I hadn't yet realised that they were a trilogy.

I started with Part 2, the Part 3 and finished with Part 1.

***SPOILERS***
Beyond the Dark Portal is a fantastic conclusion returning to Draenor and the leadership of Ner'zhul in his attempt to to bring hope and glory back to The Horde.

Grom Hellscream plays a much larger role as do Teron Gorefiend and we even catch glimpses Rexxar & Krasus of along with Deathwing and some of his more infamous children. As well as some interesting cameos for the more hardcore Warcraft Lore fan.

More is found out about the fall of the Draenei and what part the Arakkoa played.
***SPOILERS***

I would advise that you red this after reading 'Rise of the Horde' by Christie Golden and 'Tides of Darkness' by Aaron Roseberg in that order.

Rise of the Horde: Rise of the Horde No. 4 (World of Warcraft)
Tides of Darkness (World of Warcraft)

Good characterization, weak plotting and set-up 3 Jun 2009
By Brett - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book by Christie Golden continues the process of "novelizing" the classic Warcraft II computer and its expansion, Beyond the Dark Portal. The story centers around the characters Khadgar, Turalyon, Alleria, and so forth, and tells the story of the human expedition to defeat the Orcs in Draenor once they threaten the world of Azeroth a second time.

Golden, as in her earlier books, does a fairly good job of characterization. She tends a bit towards the "soft, misunderstood" side (she's not that great at making complex "evil" characters), but generally tries to create a decent characterization for the purpose of the story.

The weakness is in Golden's execution of both the story and setting. Although Golden didn't really have control over the sequence of events in either, it is really in her descriptions that the story shows its weakness. Golden is not great at describing either battles or greater strategic warfare within this novel, but more to the point, she fails to capture the SIZE and grandeur of the conflict. Remember, this is a war that devastated the greater part of a CONTINENT, in epic battles of warfare and magic - yet with Golden, you never really get a good feel for its size and scope.

I would strongly suggest you get this from a library first, before deciding on whether or not to buy it. Golden is a decent author, but she is clearly not the best within the Warcraft novel genre - that belongs to Jeff Grubb.

While there is a little bit more character development than the previous book "Tides of Darkness", it's counterbalanced by many characters being introduced and then ignored. This book and its predecessor both suffer from the same failure to convey scale.

The featured prologue is one of the five most compelling scenes in the book. The storytelling in those places is better than simply reading Wowpedia articles.

Two stars, because while I enjoyed it more than its predecessor, I simply can't recommend it to anyone. I feel it just doesn't come together as a good novel.
