Book Description

23 Oct 2012
'Beyond Contemporary Art' explores an international group of artists whose diverse creative practices over the last decade have been instrumental in the development of the contemporary art world. The vibrant contemporary art scene is one of constant expansion and innovation, where artists are continually reinventing themselves and dissolving boundaries in artistic disciplines. Etan Jonathan Ilfeld provides an illuminating introduction which discusses the development of international art fairs, the growth of graffiti and street art as well as the technological advancements which have enabled the creation of iPhone art apps, virtual reality, synthetic biology and computer art. This visually stunning and accessible book emphasizes the increased hybridization of the art world, which spans disciplines ranging from science, design and architecture to new media, film-making and performance art. Beyond Contemporary Art surveys the work of well-known artists, such as Damien Hirst and Gerhard Richter, as well as new and emerging ones such as Katie Paterson, whose projects attempt to visualize invisible forces such as dead stars and melting glaciers. This book reflects the playfully subversive nature of contemporary art and would appeal to any reader interested in the international contemporary art scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great group of artists 17 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
The author has chosen a very diverse and interesting group of artists, including both established and emerging artists. It has been quite interesting learning about artists who are younger and not as well-known. I wish the text on each artist was a bit longer but, as it is a survey book, we get a nice glimpse of each artist's work.

This book is very enjoyable. It presents a quite nice mix of artists and work and the text does a good job of describing specific works and the ideas behind them. I found the introduction very interesting as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating overview of unique contemporary artists 6 Nov 2012
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book: the diversity of artists and ideas presented is really remarkable. I think that both utter laymen and people who are very versed in contemporary art would find the book very interesting exactly because of the diversity of the material: for the former group - i.e. people with limited prior exposure to contemporary art - this is a perfect way to get broad exposure and understand what's out there. And for a more artistically sophisticated reader, this can deepen their understanding of major themes and interconnectedness of contemporary ideas. Personally, I know very little about contemporary art, so for me this book was like a window allowing me to peak into this world. I loved the photographs of the art and the essays that go along with those that give the context and the background. Highly recommended - it's a hidden gem!
