Synopsis
Director Martin Campbell (GOLDENEYE) balances a romantic tale, serious political commentary, and beautifully shot scenery from exotic locations in BEYOND BORDERS. Oscar winner Angelina Jolie gives a moving performance inspired by her real-life U.N. work, and has the perfect romantic foil in Clive Owen. Ostensibly a tale of romance triumphing against the odds, this is in fact a multifaceted story that deals with its various topics in a visually arresting style.
BEYOND BORDERS follows the problematic blossoming romance between busy American socialite Sarah Jordan (Jolie), and rogue doctor Nick Callahan (Owen). The two initially meet in 1984 at a charity event in London. Sarah is still flushed with excitement from her recent marriage, but is nevertheless enchanted by Nick's impassioned speech on behalf of starving children in Ethiopia. Sarah decides to help the cause in Africa, meeting Nick there and sparking a romantic connection which is cut short because of family and work commitments. Four years later, Sarah finds herself alone after a torrid divorce. Her work for the United Nations now consumes her thoughts, and when the chance to travel to war-torn Cambodia--and reunite with Nick--arises, it proves too good to turn down. The two immediately hit it off, but Nick's commitment to his work once again causes them to separate. Five more years pass, and when Sarah receives a call that Nick has been captured and made a prisoner of war in Chechnya, she realises she has one more chance to rescue her man, and to rekindle the passion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very moving, 4 Sep 2005
I loved the poignancy of this film. It is beautiful, shocking, informative and very sad (be warned!). If you liked The English Patient or Dr Zhivago, you'll surely like this. The romance between the two lead characters is somewhat predictable and Angelina Jolie's perfect looks in all scenes a little disbelievable, but that's Hollywood for you. Those minor points aside, this is a must-watch film to open your eyes and tug on your heart-strings. Once seen, you'll find it hard to shake out of your head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 15 Jan 2005
This is a truly great film exploring the horrors of life on the field- Jolie and Owen's characters are inspirational. Especially for Angelina Jolie this film is exceptionally personal as it rings an autobiographical touch- she has spoken of her previous ignorance of these vital issues and actively sought to change the world through her work with the UN. The film is touching and throughout, you know how much passion came into the making of it- since Hollywood is usually allergic to themes of world poverty. I really enjoyed this film and would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars OPEN YOUR EYES, 25 May 2005
By A Customer
I saw the trailer for this in the cinema but 'Beyond Borders' surprisingly went straight to DVD - I would have gone to see it just because Angelina Jolie was in it and the story seemed interesting and intelligent. I thought I'd write a review to help get the word out but there are already over 50 reviews on amazon.com (USA) - the word is very much out! The point of the film is to make us think about what's happening outside our comfortable world (as represented by Angelina's character). This compelling film takes us to some war torn dangerous countries and shows us a little of the nightmare world of refugees as well some of the dangerous work of international organisations such as the United Nations and the International Red Cross - not seen very often. There's a romantic sub-plot and enough action to limit the risk of information fatigue. I was very impressed and moved by this film. I've grown used to Bob Geldof's abusive rants (the Clive Owen character is a ranter too) but the star power of Angelina and Clive - I wouldn't have watched it otherwise - has made me see things in a different way. It opened my eyes. For that I give it 5 stars. The thoughtful DVD extras are good too.
