Book Description

What can we learn from inquiries into cases of fatal child abuse? Beyond Blame offers a new way of looking at such cases and shows that it is possible to draw important lessons from them. The authors, all three experienced in child protection work, summarise thirty-five major inquiries since 1973, setting them in their social context and discussing the implications both for practical work in the field and for future inquiries.
They stress the need for those who work day to day in child protection to develop and apply a more sophisticated level of analysis to assessment and intervention. They identify common themes within abusing families, in the relationships between members of the professional networks, and in the interactions between the families and the professionals.

I constantly use this book in my child protection training courses, and recommend it to course participants. It is refreshing in its blame-free approach to child abuse tragedies, and thought provoking as it explores the difficult issues raised by this topic. All those who are involved in working with children and families should read this book - which is as accessible as it is interesting. Definitely essential reading!

What would you do if you suspected Child Abuse? This book gives an in depth insight into some of the most publicised cases of child abuse. It presents all of the facts leaving you to learn valuable lessons. This is a very good book on this issue - one of the best in my opinion.

This is a really good book. I bought it for university and found it easy to read. It didn't go into any unnecessary detail and took a very object view. Very useful when covering safeguarding.

Even though it may seem a little outdated it is still very relevant today. I'm currently doing a degree in Social Work, and my lecturer advised this book strongly.
