Review

The novel fascinates in its record of the hazards and joys shared by a rich and rewarding company of personalities Scotsman The best novel its author has written for some time...his characters...are carved out with fine bold strokes, and the red dust of his million-acre ranch fairly gets in your throat Daily Telegraph That shattering, unaffected, literary style of his is wholly deceptive...is, in fact, masterly A brilliantly descriptive writer, a master of suspense David Holloway

I like Nevil Shute's works and it is heartening to see House Of Stratus making them available once more to a new generation of readers.

What makes a Shute story so attractive? For me, it is the philosophical underpinning that sees below the surface of things and looks at their essence.

In 'Beyond The Black Stump', we may surmise that Stanton Laird and Mollie Regan would make a good couple (both being young, white, college-educated, english-speaking and from a common ancestry). However, we see through the differences of life in Laragh Station and Hazel, Oregon that they are from two rather different worlds that have very different value systems, and that unless they can find agreement and understanding then such a marriage could never work (more than this would spoil the story).

This is another readable Shute work that holds the attention and has engaging characters that display integrity and consistency. It speaks of a moral world that has mostly vanished (sadly) and is highly enjoyable.

Excellent novel 7 Dec 1998

Nevil Shute was arguably the best storyteller of his time and anyone who reaches back into his era will be richly rewarded with any of his novels. Beyond the Black stump is typical of shute's style and the first time I read this book I was unable to put it down until its conclusion. I have read this book at least another half a dozen times since the first foray over twenty years ago. Shute offers something whether you are 12yrs old or 80 yrs old.
