What makes a Shute story so attractive? For me, it is the philosophical underpinning that sees below the surface of things and looks at their essence.
In 'Beyond The Black Stump', we may surmise that Stanton Laird and Mollie Regan would make a good couple (both being young, white, college-educated, english-speaking and from a common ancestry). However, we see through the differences of life in Laragh Station and Hazel, Oregon that they are from two rather different worlds that have very different value systems, and that unless they can find agreement and understanding then such a marriage could never work (more than this would spoil the story).
This is another readable Shute work that holds the attention and has engaging characters that display integrity and consistency. It speaks of a moral world that has mostly vanished (sadly) and is highly enjoyable.
