5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 12 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent introduction to the science-religion debate. It is very thought provoking and discusses a number of topics such as the difference between scientific and religious knowledge, the implications of evolution on religion, the role of faith, as well as some scientific issues that face humanity at the beginning of the 21 century such as sustainable consumption, global warming, the new genetics and cloning. The book does not assume any background knowledge and is readily accessible to anyone interested in the topic. I highly recommend it.

This is an excellent book, written by two expert working scientists, on current views, discussions and understanding of where science, religious belief and modern ethics meet.

It will be of great interest to scientists and educated lay persons; to persons who have christian belief and to those who simply wish to enquire, understand and explore the fascinating and important themes presented in the book.

Many recent similar books have taken the preface that "God is absent" from all areas of science, especially those dealing with enquiry into origin of life, evolution, modern genetics, and ethical challenges. These are interesting opinions and views - but it is equally important that the widest range of views, opinions and beliefs are considered and evaluated in relation to these mind and life challenging topics.

Denis Alexander and Rob White successfully draw the reader's attention to a number of fundamental questions about life and how modern ethics produce a challenge to our thinking and behaviour. Using geological, geochemical, physical, biological, biochemical and other appropriate material, the authors comment, discuss and draw conclusions that will introduce, interest and instruct readers in a positive way towards an understanding of many important scientific and ethical challenges that we face in today's modern world.

Buy a copy (and get one for your friends), you will enjoy the read and appreciate the questions and answers that we all need to consider.

This relevant, interesting and well-written book by two expert working scientists will be well received by both scientists and educated lay persons.

If a potential reader is enquiring for answers, explanations and reasoned discussion on some of the major and fundamental questions on science, faith and modern ethical challenges - THIS IS THE BOOK.

Both authors are well qualified to ask the important questions and to give reasoned answers and explanations from a Christian view point on a number of significant questions using geological, geochemical, physical, biological and biochemical scientific studies related to the origin of life, evolution, biochemistry of living systems, modern genetics and much more.

Recent publications on related scientific topics have deliberately majored on the preface of "the absence of God's role" in the evolution and development of living systems and on the ethical challenges facing the world today.

These may be interesting views - BUT there are alternative views and explanations that allow for a positive discussion of many of the ethical challenges before us.

Denis Alexander and Rob White present views and explanations that will help Christians, other believers and those of no faith to read, reflect and consider many of the most important questions being considered by both scientist and non-scientists in today's world.

A highly recommended read. Buy a copy (and one for your friend) so that you can bring yourself up to date with today's ethical challenges.
