5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by colourised version 19 Aug 2005
Format:DVD
I bought this dvd having fond memories of Bewitched from the 1960's when I was a child. It is great to see the early episodes before Tabitha arrived and even before they moved into their all so familiar new house with the nosey neighbour. And surely this programme must go down as having the greatest ever title sequence and theme tune!
Much has been said about the availabilty of the Black & White set in the US aswell as the Colour version but only the the Colour set being available in the UK. I was initally disappointed with this but have bought the colourised version anyway being wary that the Black & White NTSC version which could be purchased direct from the US would not play aswell on my DVD player.
It must be said that the colouring of the episodes by the studio is exceptional - you really wouldn't know this process has been used and I've compared these episodes with later ones I have on video and you really can't tell the difference.
That said I wish the studio had given the choice between the formats on the same discs but no doubt that would have used up too much space.
This is a very fine well overdue set of a great 1960's US sitcom which undoubtedly I'm sure J K Rowling has used as a little bit of inspiration for her Harry Potter Books - particulary the marvellous episodes featuring Aunt Clara!

5.0 out of 5 stars The old magic is still working 4 Aug 2005
By TM
Format:DVD
This box set is great value for money, with 38 episodes of the first season. The package is well presented, and there are a couple of extras, one on the making of the programme, plus some out-takes. We saw a lot of the series when it was broadcast again last year, but it's great to have it on this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Enchanting 12 Jun 2007
Format:DVD
Once upon a time, an All American girl kept bumping into an All American boy. And bumping. And bumping. So he asked her out, and she accepted. They fell in love, got married, and in the second season, had a baby (actually, they had 2). Except this girl happened to be a witch.

This was the premise for the beloved iconic 1960's television series, Bewitched. It starred Elizabeth Montgomery as the beautiful witch who fell in love with an marred a mortal, Dick York (in the first 5 seasons) as the young mortal Darrin Stevens, an advertising executive, who became her husband, the marvellous Agnes Moorehead (dig her hair and eye shadow!) as Sam's upset mother, and their best friends (and Darrin's boss and his wife) Larry and Louse Tate (played by David white and Irene Vernon). Sam wishes to fit into the human world and help Darrin live his ordinary life the same as any other man, but she simply finds it difficult to not twitch her nose and unbreak casserole dishes, or get a little help hanging pictures, and "unimportant" things such as that. Unimportant except for the fact every neighbourhood has at least ONE nosy housewife, and hers lives across the street.....Gladys Kravitz (played by Alice Pearce). Gladys is always trying to get the law, various politicians, neighbours, and her long suffering husband, Abner (George Tobias) to believe the bizarre things she sees.

This television series was groundbreaking. It not only was Samantha the first TV character to have divorced parents, but it was also the show that brought the occult into the mainstream with witches as likeable characters. Later TV shows through the decades owe a lot to this series, and indeed, Charmed even paid homage to it and its '60's sensibilities in an episode.

This box set is for series 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy, warm and irresistible 8 Aug 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I firmly believe every home should have at least one series of Bewitched in the collection. No, make that four or five. This particular one is colourised so I always turn the colour down to zero before watching it. I have no idea why tv and film executives choose to add colour to old shows, because it never really works. Light and colour are too complicated to fake, so why do they even try? It's a process which makes everything look plastic and sterile, especially on the actors and actresses. It's a crime for which execs deserve to be publicly flogged by every man, woman and child around the world. And then shot. And then hung.

But aside from that minor gripe, I had never seen this series before. It has a style and endearing quality which I find impossible to dislike, and even the not-so-successful episodes pass me by with barely a ripple of annoyance. It's also a great slice of mid-60s middle class Americana (except for all the witchcraft).

There have been times over the years (since watching this as a kid in the holidays) when I wondered about the back-story to Bewitched, I mean how did Darren, a mortal with hair you could cook chips in, manage to land an über-babe wife like Samantha? How did they ever meet, where did she come from, what was she doing in the mortal world, why is he so hung up on her magical abilities, and what's the big problem with the mother-in-law of all mother-in-laws? And what does Samantha do all day?
Sadly these aren't really addressed. I would have liked to have seen a few episodes of tricky dating, and then meeting the respective families... and Darren gradually suspecting and then finding she's a witch, of course.
