Well to start off with, this is the fourth in the Raine Benares series by Lisa Shearin.
This book starts a few weeks after 'The Trouble with Demons' with Raine hunting down the souls of six evil mages who had the temerity to escape from the Saghred (a soul sucking rock bonded to our Raine), which included her arch-nemesis Sarad Nukpana who's quite pissed off with her!

The first line was a hook, that just kept me reading. Any book that starts with: "I was being chased by a pissed-off naked guy with a knife. A really big knife." is a win!

The troubles just add up, she has an umi'atsu bond with Dark Mage Tam and Guardian Paladin Mychael, which if found out by the council will result in her execution... or theirs, which an elf council member with a taste for self- righteous retribution, power and a belief in elven superiority knows about (cliff-hanger from last book - whats he gonna do? :P ), Tam is framed and falsely imprisoned, The sagred steps up its 'seduction' trying to tempt Raine into using it, the head of the Goblin secret service drops by (with dimples! I loved her character!), Nukpana goes on an elf killing spree with a high ranking elf official next on his to-kill list... And the Reapers are back. In force. They would love to suck the souls out of the saghred (unfortunately through Raine which could cause her soul to go bye bye too). So.. fun times, Death, False imprisonment, Assassins, Political Intrigue, Sneaking and Breaking and Entering, Undercover shenanigans as hired 'hitmen', (low-key) Romance, very powerful (threatened) teenagers causing havoc... (Talon and Piaras of course, who else?) And Seafaring Businessmen. Wouldnt be complete without the Seafaring Businessmen (i.e. Pirates) Oh and BIG EXPLOSIONS!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing! 6 May 2010

Being a huge Lisa Shearin fan, I dived right into Bewitched & Betrayed, ready to be swept away by the danger Raine would find herself in this time, and I wasn't disappointed! Bewitched & Betrayed might just be the best in the series so far!

Raine is in a whole lot of trouble with the escaped spectres, especially as Sarad Nukpana is also free and after four things; a body, power, the saghred, and Raine's soul. If that wasn't bad enough, Carnedes and Balmorlan are up to no good and plan to get Raine, and anyone who stands with her, safely out of the way so they can use the Saghred themselves.

This book is just so exciting! Like in all the books in the series, Raine gets barely a moments rest as she races against time to save herself, the people she loves, and keep everyone away from the Saghred, but everyone's upped their A-game, and it gets more difficult for Raine to fight them and the power of the Saghred. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat throughout. The action is amazing, but there is a whole lot of fear and anguish besides. If you've read the rest of the series, you would have come to love these fantastic characters, and you will be fearing for every single one of them. You can't help but get really emotionally involved in this book. No-one is safe.

The love triangle that is Raine, Mychael and Tam comes to an end in this book. I'm a regular reader of Lisa Shearin's blog, so I knew something important was going to happen that would effect the love triangle, though I won't say what, because you may end up like me. Until I got to that point, I was impatiently willing myself to read faster to get to it, to find out who Raine chooses, and it probably wasn't the best way to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bewitched and Bedazzled! 8 July 2011
By The Demon Librarian TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Excellent continuation. I am so glad I persevered with this series after my shaky start. It's unfortunate that it has what I call "dodgy book one syndrome" which I'm sure will put many people off from picking up the second book, but you really, really should. It's not that book one was bad exactly...just confusing. But even that could have just been me having a particularly slow day. I bet if I read it back now, knowing the characters and the world as I do, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

See, it's me, not you, book. Oh how the tides and turned.

BEWITCHED AND BETRAYED sees the re-emergence of a couple of adversaries from past books. I really wanted to delve into the book, grab them by the scruff of the neck and scream, "will you just DIE already!" but alas, the laws of physics were being stubborn as usual.

Ooh, ooh, and FINALLY some progress on the romance front! Yay! I'm not a fan of love triangles, and really, I'm not sure if I would even classify what happens in this series as a love triangle. It's more just that there are two guys declaring their interest and intent, and only one prize. So my delicate sensibilities when it comes to cheating and messing with people's feelings, don't get offended by this series at all. And the romantic development here in this book is more than satisfying and puts an end to discussion once and for all.

I'm heading straight for the next book in the series: Con and Conjure. Can't wait!

Enjoyed the series, it’s full of magic and the supernatural, just my kind of book. I would encourage others to get this book and the series.

Lisa Shearin's Bewitched & Betrayed is fourth in her "Raine Benares" series. Somehow, I've managed to read only books two and four, yet the series still makes perfect sense. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Happily impressed.
I've got to admit that the elves types fantasy is not my usual pick and it is for that reason that I have avoided reading these books for so long - what a mistake. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good ... but maybe lingering on
I did enjoy this book, more so than the previous one, but I feel like the story with the 'saghred' and Sarad Nukpana needs to come to an end as it is just dragging on. Read more

This is the fourth book in the 'Raine Benares' series, and each book is better than the one before. It's hugely enjoyable and a fast-paced pageturner. Read more
