Product Description

How acute are your powers of perception? Do they begin to match those of Gervase Fen, Oxford don and sleuth supreme? These sixteen short stories are classic examples of Fen's mastery of his art-solving the most insoluble cries where even the best brains in the police force are frankly baffled. They also allow you to flex your own crime-solving museles: each story contains all the clues needed to anticipate the outcome, using logic and common sense... with a bit of ingenuity thrown in! Do you dare to take them on?

This is a fascinating collection of short stories featuring the academic sleuth, Professor Gervase Fen. All have the same flavour as the full length novels featuring the same academic and many also feature Inspector Humbleby. I do like Humbleby, he is one of the most likeable of the fictional detectives populating the realms of crime fiction and sometimes he does have a lot to put up with working with Fen.

The stories are well written with intriguing plot lines. Many are in the form of a tale being told long after the event as is common with crime short stories. Others are told as they happen and all will keep the reader guessing until the solution is revealed in the final few paragraphs.

Edmund Crispin rewards the reader with top class writing and delicious mystery. He is often irreverent about the British establishment without diminishing it. This book is for those who enjoy mystery books written by a keen mind with a classical education and a wicked sense of humour.
