It was okay, I guess. 24 Jan 2006
Format:DVD
This was an okay miniseries. I'm a big fan of Brenda Blethyn, so I enjoyed seeing her here. However, I saw a little *too* much of her, as well as almost everyone else in this miniseries. There's some nudity here (most especially bare backsides) and some of it was a little over the top for my tastes. Your mileage may vary in regards to that, however. (It wasn't the nudity that bothered me so much--I don't consider myself too much of a prude--but that it got tedious and tiresome after a while, and did not move the story along.)

There are several storylines going on here: The pretty sex therapist and her problems with her live-in boyfriend (Richard Armitage). Those who loved Armitage in "North & South" will be pleased to know that he has a substantial part in this miniseries, but his character is not as romantic as it was in "North." (We see more than a few glimpses of his bare backside as well.) Armitage's character has some suspicion cast upon him when he is accused of inappropriate behavior with a minor. Did he or didn't he do it? Trust issues develop between this couple.

Brenda Blethyn's character is having trouble with her clueless and insensitive husband (Alun Armstrong), and she also is struggling with her own ambivalent feelings towards sex. She and her reluctant husband seek out the services of the sex therapist. Some of Blethyn's storyline is funny, some of it was (again) a little over the top for my tastes. I will always admire her, but I think I saw a little more of her skin than I would have preferred. (It's not too bad, really.) At least there are some amusing moments occasionally.

There is also a storyline involving Blethyn's and Armstrong's son, his estranged girlfriend, and a new woman who he is interested in. I found this story to be the weakest of the three, and the character of the son to be selfish and annoying.

I was less than overwhelmed with this miniseries, but it really wasn't that terrible. The presence of Armitage and Blethyn helped considerably. However, their performances cannot carry the whole thing. If the subject matter of this miniseries does not interest you, then you might give it a pass. If you are dreamy-eyed over Richard Armitage since seeing him in "North & South" (which is completely understandable!), look into buying "Sparkhouse" instead. He's quite wonderful in that, and you'll fall in love with his character.

Between The Sheets is a fantastic showcase for the talents and considerable attributes of Brenda Blethyn and Julie Graham. Brenda Blethyn proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that older women are the sexiest of all and Julie Graham radiates a powerfully sexy undercurrent throughout, as the sex therapist. Considering this was originally made for and was originally broadcast on television, it has some amazingly erotic and daring scenes. One such scene features the bodacious Miss Blethyn's unhappily married character in the bathtub with a younger man, with whom she is having an affair. For a television production, it has a surprising amount of nudity and sex scenes. Given it's title, it doesn't disappoint.

Between the Sheets 8 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
Between the Sheets is a story about relationships. We start with Peter and Hazel, married for 30+ years. Peter (Alun Armstrong) is a successful businessman and Hazel (Brenda Blethyn) wants for nothing materially but is lonely and unfulfilled - her children have grown up and she has no idea the nightclubs Peter runs have become pole dancing venues. She has never had an orgasm - the start of this series sees Hazel so repressed she can barely look at herself and hasn't let Peter touch her in years. Meanwhile Peter's mother (Liz Smith) has just embarked on a new relationship and makes no bones about her fantastic sex life. Peter and Hazel go to see a therapist, Alona (Julie Graham), who is going through relationship issues of her own. Alona's partner, youth worker Paul (Richard Armitage) has been accused of having sex with an under age client although he won't have sex with Alona. Other characters stories weave through the narrative - Hazel and Peter's son, Peter's mistress, Alona's teenage son and au pair and the parks and wildlife man, beautifully played by Dean Andrews.

I loved this series - the entire cast was excellent and the story well thought out and believable. The sex was graphic but it was those scenes that conveyed so much about intimacy, misunderstanding, pain and betrayal. In my opinion the story would have lacked depth if they had been censored and it is to the writers, directors and actors credit that i was able to feel empathy for all the main characters, even though none of them were without flaws.

Don't watch this with your maiden aunt but watch it with someone you can have an honest conversation with. For me, every moment of the 295 minute running time was a joy and i'm very sorry no second series was commissioned because it was the best thing i've seen in ages.
