Product Description

'Richard Shiff's Between Sense and De Kooning is a tour de force. But of what precisely? It's a category of art writing for which there is no genre, like De Kooning famously said of Duchamp, he's a movement of one! This is not a survey or a biography but an extraordinarily deep conversation with the reader about what De Kooning painted and what he said about it. It is an absolutely unique and wonderful book.'- -- Jonathan Fineberg

Sensible and de Kooning 12 Jan 2012

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this review. This book, as expected, contains major de Kooning works. Perhaps not quite as expected, it contains some very interesting and intelligently expressed points of view concerning de Kooning's process. And lack of process. If there was ever a case where the artist played more of a role in his/her career than the art itself, I'm not aware of it. That said, I'm not always sure I agree with some of these views. I'm not always sure I even understand all of them. But I do find them intriguing and worthwhile, at least for the purpose of considering Willem de Kooning's life in art and the motivation behind the work. This book might benefit from the recent Pulitzer Prize winning biography, "de Kooning - An American Master". Since I cannot UNread the biography, I can't be sure that the two books do not work together better than either of them standing alone, but I have a hunch that it might be true. The biography is a rare page turner, and so is this, the next chapter.
