Product Description

CD Description

'In Between' is the fifth studio artist album from German trance producer Paul Van Dyk. Recorded and produced by Van Dyk himself, the album continues with the classic trance soundthat he helped develop in the early nineties under the Visions Of Shiva guise. Guest vocals come from the likes of Talking Heads' David Byrne, The Pussycat Dolls' Jessica Sutta and Alex M.O.R.P.H. The single 'White Lies' is also included.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very good in parts, 13 Aug 2007
By C. Furey (Donegal, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: In Between (Audio CD)
Well, i picked up a pre-release edition of this album on my visit to Ibiza and thought i'd write a review while it was hot off the press.
I'd really need to have a few more listens to give a completely comprehensive analysis but i listened to it twice on the way back from the airport and my initial impressions are mainly positive.

The first thing to note is that there are a lot of collaborations with other artists as PVD attempts to expand musically rather than repeat what he's already done. There are also a mixture of styles as he tries to cover a few bases, we have a bit of pop trance, indie trance, electro house, plus the more recognisable pumping PVD sound.

The new single "White Lies" is ok, i still prefer the dub version but the vocal isn't completely out of place and after a few listens, it is growing on me.It's a bit like the remix of the Justin Timberlake track he did- a cross between prog trance and electro. The intro track," Haunted" however, is a track that really could have done without the vocals though, a nice mellow number which would have served as a good intro track if it wasn't for an irritating vocal which is fine at the beginning but just becomes tiresome after a while.
I also found this with the first four or five tracks, good productions, no need for gratuitous singing!

There is an electro house track around 4 or 5 which shows that PVD is clearly up to date with the current flavours, refusing to be pigeonholed as a mere trance artist and showing his range admirably.

It gets a bit more banging around track 6 ( Far Away?), i think, i heard PVD play this track this track in Ibiza on Thursday night and knew straight away that it was one of his own productions ( having never heard it before), no mistaking the trademark PVD synths! I hoped that this would be included on the album and was glad to see that it was as it is an excellent club track.

There are a few more uptempo numbers and just when i was hoping it would really reach a climax, a few weird indie influences crept in again which sounded a bit out of place.

Knowing PVD, any future singles will have various remix versions of the tracks, he does work hard in the studio and doesn't go for the easy option which is good to see and club or dub options are often included.

It would be very easy to conclude that this album is the new commercial sound of PVD. A lot of trance pioneers have taken this road, Oakenfold, Tiesto, even BT and some of Armin's stuff is very poppy at times. I don't think that PVD has completely gone down that road ( i was a bit concerned by "Reflections" compared to his previous work) but i think it is important that he continues to keep an underground edge in the clubs if he isn't to alienate fans of his early stuff.

My initial conclusions of " In Between" would be that the title is apt, in between good and not so good. Worth buying but a little overcomplicated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bouncy / uplifting. , 7 Sep 2007
By lovelytigs (Brighton) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Between (Audio CD)
If you like bouncy, uplifting trance, then you'll like this. I am a massive Armin Van Buuren fan and have been for a while, but after listening to this album, it makes me realise why Armin is 3rd in world ranking and Paul Van Dyk is 2nd. Not to commercial either, not heard any of the tracks on here before. A nice little number to add to your collection.

This cd is great. Nothing to say more. Listen to it and decide for yourselves. Outstanding tracks are Far Away, New York City, Stormy Skies, In Between and of course...Another Sunday. Pure PVD dance innovation to enjoy!

Lengthy album - very much trademark PVD. Tracks are mixed.
