4.0 out of 5 stars The band they could have been. 18 April 2006
By dynamitekid156 VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This was most people's first taste of Funeral for a Friend, their very first release.

Along with Four Ways To Scream Your Name, it's infinitely superior to their subsequent studio albums. Every song here is brilliant. '10:45 Amsterdam Conversation' is arguably the best track they ever did; 'Juno,' in its original, wonderfully brutal form here, is vastly superior to the poppier 'Juneau' that was later released; 'Red Is The New Black,' with it's scenester-baiting title, is still better as it is here than its slicker later version; and closing it all is 'The Art Of Americna Football,' just over two minutes of their fastest, most anthemic music that they still drop into their live sets to this day.

Remember them this way, not as the whiney emo band pandering to the masses that they have since become.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red is the new black! 12 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD
Ive had this ep for a good few months,so i thought it was about time i told amazon how amazing it is. Funeral for a friend are a hardcore/emo crossover act from wales. Although the ep has only 4 tracks, each track is excellent. My favourite track on the ep is constantly changing but at the moment it is "red is the new black", like the other tracks its emotional stuff with excellent singing and passionate screaming. There is a lot of bands singing and screaming at the moment, but funeral for a friend dont sound like anyone out there at the moment. They have toured with finch, boy sets fire and from autumn to ashes and thats a good reference point for funeral for a friend. They are also excellent live and top blokes. Cant wait for the next ep!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars ITS ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR SCHOOL OF THOUGHT 7 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
This is a high quality emo/metalcore release from an up and coming Welsh band (although you'd never guess they where from Wales). They follow in the footsteps of intense/melodic bands like Poison The Well, From Autumn To Ashes and The Blueprint. This sensibly priced EP contains just 4 trks ranging from 3 to 5 minutes and the total length is just under 15 minutes.

Musically this band are very good and lace together some great melodies, churning power riffs and old skool punk. The aggressive vocals are a cut above the rest, some really focused and controlled yet outright tortured screams and shouts. Unfortunatly the emo softer vocals are the weak link. They sound way too commercial and sugar coated, and on trk 3 (the weakest trk), the vocals sound like the U.S powder pop-rock band 'Train'.

Now some might enjoy this but it all depends on what type of emo/metalcore you've heard before. If you are approaching this album after liking commercial emo bands like Finch, Glassjaw et al. then this album would be right up your street, (just a little more intense). If like me your more fond of the underground metalcore scene with bands like Converge, 3stagesofpain, TheRise, Johnny Truant and those mentioned in the 1st paragraph, then this Ep can be a little frustrating because of the slightly commercial sound.

The only band that i've heard that combines intense metalcore with good quality emotional singing is From Autumn To Ashes with The Blueprint & Earthtone9 just behind. This EP should definatly be checked out .....
