Janis Ian is one of the most enduring, most talented, yet conversely the most underrated of American songwriters. Although her CBS era recordings have been reissued before, they've never been accorded the kind of quality makeover that they've deserved - until now. This CD and DVD release yokes together her epochal 'Between The Lines' album, plus a 'Whistle Test' concert (seen in its entirety for the first time since it's initial broadcast back in the mid 1970s). You also get a couple of extra performances from the 'Shirley Bassey Show' and the late 'Lena Zavaroni Show'. 'Between The Lines' contains her classic 'At Seventeen', which still regularly gets played on Radio 2, and, although it wasn't a hit over here, was all over the radio at the time.

There are several more reissues planned of Janis' excellent back catalogue throughout 2010, and if they're as good as this, then I for one will be more than happy. If you've never invested in a Janis Ian record before, than do so now!

In the UK, most of us have only heard of Janis Ian through her hit single "At Seventeen". But I wanted to hear more, so I bought "Between The Lines & Whistle Test Concert"... and was not disappointed.

This album is fantastic! To me, it rivals Carol King's "Tapestry" for song writing excellence. After the first play I was hooked. With "Tea And Sympathy" almost bring me to tears with its sentiment. The track "At Seventeen" is equalled in writing and in some cases bettered.

The Whistle Test DVD is the perfect insight to a beautiful young girl at the peak of her writing.

I love this album as much as I loved "Tapestry" when I first heard that. But Janis Ian and "Between The Lines" just takes it for me.

Highly recommended.

Like everyone else it seems, my introduction to Janis Ian was the beautiful and heartfelt "At Seventeen", a song that once it was over on the radio back when I was a child in the '70s, I immediately wanted to hear it again. Despite growing up loving that song it wasn't until recently I discovered the name of the person who sung it. The song reminds me of solitary walks in the countryside when young and now not-so young. It has always had a resonatingly haunting and yet comforting appeal to me. So it was on the strength of that one song and having discovered the name of the artist that I bought this album, which upon the first couple of plays I would describe as a mellow, adult orientated album. Apart from the impossible to beat "At Seventeen", my favourite other tracks here are "In The Winter, Tea and Sympathy, and Lover's Lullaby", though there is not a poor song on the disc.

The dvd contains a ten song Old Grey Whistle Test set that lasts approximately 45 minutes. We discover that Janis not only writes and sings her own material, but plays guitar and piano. There then follows an earlier Whistle Test performance from 1974 featuring another two songs, then further appearances in 1976 on the Shirley Bassey show, and lastly on the late Lena Zavaroni show in 1980.

Both discs are excellent in sound quality and the dvd viewing quality is good. A 20 page liner includes lyrics to all the songs on the cd, a three page contribution from Janis recalling her thoughts on making the album, a section by Val Jennings regarding "Janis Ian - Live on BBC TV", several photos and extensive noting of personnel involved in both album and dvd.

I thought that this cd was good but the more I listen to it the more I think it is brilliant, so glad I ordered it. Janis Ian is a very talented lady who writes beautiful, moving songs.
The cd arrived in good time and I am very happy with that. x

I have always liked Janis Ian especially her haunting "At 17". This shows that she is more than a one song wonder, searing, intimate, heart rending lyrics.

For me the Whistle Test concert is a bonus. as a teenager my friend got tickets for a Whistle Test Concert- if there was only one I must have been there

All the old Janis Ian fans knows the CD has all the basic qualities
of a sensitive and intelligent songwriter.
The sound on the DVD is very good, but the picture quality is old tv style.
Square and to too detailed.
But it is nice to see Janis enjoying playing with the band.
