5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Beauty 3 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
Sometimes 5 stars are not enough to separate the really good from the once in a lifetime brilliance that albums such as "Between the Lines" offer. I never knew that sadness could be portrayed in such a beautiful way. Throughout the entire album Janis Ian bears her soul in such an honest and raw way, you feel as if you are reading through her own private diaries. Every track, and I mean every track, is an absolute gem. We all know "At Seventeen" but the others are all standout tracks also.

You wonder how much someone must suffer to be able to draw on such material. Words and sentiments apart, the musical arrangements and melody on the songs are outstanding. They literally send a shiver down your spine and take you back to a place where you don't go willingly, as it can be too painful.

This is an amazing piece of work that not surprisingly, she has never bettered. But then again, very few artists have yet to come up with anything that bears critical comparison to this genuine masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars A little gem of an album! 21 Feb 2007
Format:Audio CD
I discovered Janis Ian some 20 (or so!) years ago and this was the first album of hers I bought. It has spent more hours on my turntable and, later, cd player than probably any other album I have ever owned! It contains the well known 'At Seventeen' a beautiful ballad reflecting the difficulties and awkwardness of growing up and feeling the misfit. However this is only one of the standout tracks on the album. My personal favourite is 'Watercolours' a beautiful, melancholy ballad charting the demise of a relationship.

Her songs reel with emotions of pain, lonliness and sadness... probably much of the reason I adored her as teenager and beyond. Her words are poignant and moving and encapsulate so many experiences in our lives. The arrangements are simple and beautiful and her lovely voice simply adds to the delight. Janis Ian is a standout singer/songwriter for me and this is her best album by far.

Turn the lights down low, pour yourself a glass or two of wine, light the fire and listen with wonder while the tears stream down your face!

5.0 out of 5 stars The joys and miseries of young adult hood 22 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album is simply sublime. Like I said, it encaptulates the highs and lows of early adulthood better than anything alse I've heard. I'm not sure whether this would appeal to the male audience as it does focus fairly heavily on the growing pains of women, but I would recommend it to anyone to try. Light a few candles, run a bath, put this on and relax into the beautiful warm tones that this woman creates effortlessly.
