Description

BETWEEN DAYLIGHT AND DARK is the first album that New Orleans resident Mary Gauthier wrote and recorded after HurricaneKatrina nearly destroyed the city in 2005. Recorded live inthe studio by producer and musician Joe Henry, with the barest minimum of overdubs, this is Gauthier at her most unguarded and emotionally expansive. The songs range from character studies of the down and out to subtle protest songs, all of them feeling intensely personal in a way that many similarsinger-songwriters never quite manage. Highlights include the deeply affecting "Last of the Hobo Kings".

This is a great album. Mary Gauthier (I've been told it's pronounced 'Go-Shay') has a hard edge to her vocals - she reminds me in some way of Lucinda Williams, with a little bit of John Prine thrown in for good measure on her earlier albums! For me, the best tracks on this CD are 'Snakebit', 'Can't Find the Way' (about the New Orleans floods?) and 'Please'. But there isn't a bad track on this album - and the sound and production are perfect. Mary's voice is the main instrument, but accompanied by some great guitar playing. And I'm convinced that the drummer on 'Last of the Hobo Kings' is drumming with his hands on bare skin rather than drums! This is a fantastic album, and at the price it's a bargain. Don't hesitate, just buy it!
