Back in the days when "rock" female singer-songwriters weren't the height of fashion, this album came out and just blew me away.
Less commercial than some of her contemporaries, such as Sheryl Crow, but at the same time not as alienating (in terms of radio friendliness) as the likes of Liz Phair, this album finds a happy balance somewhere between those two ends of the spectrum.
No track outstays its welcome, and Patti perfects the art of the three-minute single (even if chart success never did touch these songs. Indeed this is one of those rare albums where you really can say that every track could have been a single and you can listen without ever once reaching for that next track button on your remote control.
It's sad that this album didn't bring Patti more commercial success than it did, but don't let that distract you from what a great record this actually is. Superb.
