The film itself is standard fayre. It is good, slick stuff, there can be no mistake. Brauer is very good indeed, as is Wiper himself for his acting debut, and Lou Diamond Phillips saunters through the film playing Lou Diamond Phillips but as the character is in essence him, that's not too much of a problem. The story is pretty good - Wiper is a Chicago Cop (not a particularly good one) who, having had enough, leaves the Windy City to propose to his ex-girlfriend (Natasha Henstridge). Not that orginal, I'll grant you, the 'dired out cop' story, but the stunning alacrity with which major names are dispensed with (I'll say no more) is really quite brave. There are some good twists and turns, and some well-rounded characters but in all it is nothing unexpected. However, Wiper still serves up a tasty meal with good performances seasoning a well-cooked dish. It is worth the effort and will surprise at just how much it achieves.
But, as I began, Wiper's commentary is one of the highlights of the disc - how to put together a low budget film and get on board decent people to make it properly. I'd buy it just for that, but the opening sequence, which is the main reason the whole film got made, is hectic, excellently choreographed stuff.
The action is good, the story is compelling and the acting is pretty slick. All in all - expect what it is, a damn good B-movie in the finest traditions of the genre.
A Better Way to die is the best action-packed film of the year 2000, and its dark humor and hilarious gun fights and won't leave viewers disapointed. I highly recommend A BETTER WAY TO DIE.
After reading nothing but great reviews everywhere I looked, I decided to finally pick up this movie and I was not disappointed. This is a movie all action fans will love. There is also a great plot and the story serves up several twists and turns. The great thing is not many of them are predictable. This film was written, directed and stars Scott Wiper. He has also put together a great cast including Andre Braugher, Joe Pantoliano, Natasha Henstridge and Lou Diamond Phillips. I can't wait to see more of his work.
The DVD is presented in 16 X 9 anamorphic Widescreen and in DD 5.1 surround. The only downside it that there is not much in the way of suppliments. There is a commentary by Scott Wiper and the theatrical trailer.
