It's good - try it. 25 Oct 2002
Format:DVD
The best thing about DVD's is the Director's and Actors' audio commentary. Not to have it is a real wasted opportunity. Scott Wiper acted, wrote and directed this film so it's little surprise that it is his voice on the commentary. And good that it is, for it adds something that Singer, Soderburgh and Fincher might have missed - he's an ordinary guy with stuff to say about movies.

The film itself is standard fayre. It is good, slick stuff, there can be no mistake. Brauer is very good indeed, as is Wiper himself for his acting debut, and Lou Diamond Phillips saunters through the film playing Lou Diamond Phillips but as the character is in essence him, that's not too much of a problem. The story is pretty good - Wiper is a Chicago Cop (not a particularly good one) who, having had enough, leaves the Windy City to propose to his ex-girlfriend (Natasha Henstridge). Not that orginal, I'll grant you, the 'dired out cop' story, but the stunning alacrity with which major names are dispensed with (I'll say no more) is really quite brave. There are some good twists and turns, and some well-rounded characters but in all it is nothing unexpected. However, Wiper still serves up a tasty meal with good performances seasoning a well-cooked dish. It is worth the effort and will surprise at just how much it achieves.

But, as I began, Wiper's commentary is one of the highlights of the disc - how to put together a low budget film and get on board decent people to make it properly. I'd buy it just for that, but the opening sequence, which is the main reason the whole film got made, is hectic, excellently choreographed stuff.

The action is good, the story is compelling and the acting is pretty slick. All in all - expect what it is, a damn good B-movie in the finest traditions of the genre.

I thought this was going to be shoot-em-up film, but it turned out to be quite good (barring a few slow-motion, cheesy love scenes). There are a few fairly violent scenes, but the characters are interesting enough to keep you watching. Andre Braugher is excellent as a professional killer with a strict code of honour.

A Great Action Movie 12 Mar 2001
By Simon Remwald - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
This is indeed the best action movie of 2000. Even though it was not realeased in theatre's, it is clearly a great action film. As the film opens, an undercover cop watches his partner blown away in an undercover deal gone bad. He quits the department and leaves to be with his girlfriend who has given him a second chance, but along the way, he gets shot at, chased, and winds up wanted by police and a gang of assassins who think he's someone else. By the time the film ends, you've seen a great action movie with a good plot. Thats usually hard to find.

NOBODY'S NERVOUS 8 Sep 2002
By Marcel McGuire - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
A Better Way To Die is a action-packed,dark-comedy about a ex-chicago-cop named "Boomer" who quits the force after his partner is killed in a undercover drug bust by ruthless gangters, and desides to go up north to wire things up with his estranged girlfriend, but on the way he gets robbed, shot at,beaten, framed, and his girlfriend killed in the process, and is mistakenly identified as a missing FBI agent the Chicago mob and corrupt FBI agents are trying to track down which leads Boomer to a quest of bloodshed and revenge.

A Better Way to die is the best action-packed film of the year 2000, and its dark humor and hilarious gun fights and won't leave viewers disapointed. I highly recommend A BETTER WAY TO DIE.

A hidden treasure. Where did this come from? 4 Aug 2001
By Joe J Barclay - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Boomer (Scott Wiper) is tired of all the violence in his job and the city that he lives in. He decides to quit the police force and return home to a small town and his girlfriend (Natasha Henstridge). On the way home he is mistaken for a government operative and becomes the target of several hitmen and a government agent (Lou Diamond Phillips).

After reading nothing but great reviews everywhere I looked, I decided to finally pick up this movie and I was not disappointed. This is a movie all action fans will love. There is also a great plot and the story serves up several twists and turns. The great thing is not many of them are predictable. This film was written, directed and stars Scott Wiper. He has also put together a great cast including Andre Braugher, Joe Pantoliano, Natasha Henstridge and Lou Diamond Phillips. I can't wait to see more of his work.

The DVD is presented in 16 X 9 anamorphic Widescreen and in DD 5.1 surround. The only downside it that there is not much in the way of suppliments. There is a commentary by Scott Wiper and the theatrical trailer.
