Product Description
Brothers Enemies Killers! A Korean remake of John Woo's susccesful 'A Better Tomorrow', it tells of Hyuk (Jin-mo), who lives the fast life as a high-ranking mobster in Busan, South Korea with his closest pal, fellow mobster Lee Young-Chun (Seung-heon). Hyuk is haunted by the memory of leaving behind his younger brother Chul (Kang-woo) and mother as they attempted to flee into South Korea from North Korea. In a set-up, Hyuk by the police and jailed. Three years later, he is released and travels back to Busan to find his younger brother Chul now a high-ranking police officer. Hyuk tries to earn back the trust of his brother, but rejection and betrayal are hard to forget. Things come to a head when Young-Chun pulls Hyuk into doing one last gig. It happen to be the case that Officer Chul is in charge of, and the three brothers meet again one final time.

Having come into this film blind (not seen the original) i had no preconceived ideas about what i was about to watch. A really good solid film with a gripping storyline and an ending that had my jaw hitting the floor.
Korean Cinema has really improved over the last few years and bringing John Woo into produce was a master stroke. Loved the gunfights which yelled of Woo's influence and as a mega fan of Hard Boiled this was no bad thing.

I was very excited to watch this remake on bluray 3D but it turn out to be a huge disappointment. Obviously this film was not shot using 3D cameras but it's a bad conversion that any 3d TV can make from a 2D sources.
Ok after a few minutes I decided to switch to the 2D version included on the same disc but it was not any better. I'm sorry I wasted any money on this bad quality product.

Great Korean Remake of the Hong Kong Gangster Classic that reinvented the Genre

This is a Korean version by Director Song Hae-Seong, but with the collaboration of the original writer of the Hong Kong classic, John Woo. Many have complained that this does not add anything to the original and as such is inferior, however I decided to watch this with an openish mind and see what I thought, and I must say I loved it. The original is feted with shooting Chow Yun Fat to fame, starting off a rash of copycat gangster films and upping the sale of Aviator sunglasses and trench coats, so this has a lot to live up to - except about the rain coats that is, I mean Inspector Clouseu wore one.
The plot is around North Korean escapee Kim Hyeok (Jin Mo-Ju -`The Warrior' and `Real Fiction') he has been taken under the wing of a kind police Lieutenant Park and his larger than life auntie, but he also dabbles in a spot of international, illegal arms dealing. The cash he makes from that he spends trying to find his younger brother who was caught trying to escape with him and whom he left behind to face the North Korean bitter justice. This brother is Kim Cheol (Kang- woo Kim), but Hyeok has a best mate too in the shape of Yeong Choon (Seung Heon-Song) and after a deal goes very bad very quick he seeks a bungled revenge. Meanwhile little brother has escaped ben found and reunited but has refused to forgive Hyeok for abandoning him and moreover decides to become a police man putting them either side of the law.
For those who have seen the original this plays very much along the same lines, but with changes of scenery and parts of the plot. If you have not seen it then let me just say that this takes a while to do the scene setting and to pull the masks off of some of the main players. There is bags of action, and some great music too which you do tend to get with Korean cinema.... Read more ›

There are some interesting ideas in this movie (setting the story within the context of North and South Korea works well), and overall, it is a decent action movie, but nothing more.
The problem is that action scenes lack intensity as does the story overall.

- A BETTER TOMORROW 2012 is superior to the original in one aspect: A great performance by Jo Han-Seon as the turncoat villain helps flesh out a comparatively thin plot thread from the original. Unlike the 1986 movie, we actually get to see the how and why of the heel turn in the remake.
- Also better: The Emily Chu flower vase/comic relief girlfriend character is replaced by a gruff yet caring auntie. No goofy scenes involving cellos, flowers or headphones in the 2012 version.
- Egads! A BETTER TOMORROW was released in Hong Kong on February 8th, 1986. It's now a little over 25 years old! Twenty-five years! Egads! Eeeeeegads!
